Poll question: How much effort does it take to kick and recommend a thread?
I ask, because I'm trying to understand the disappointing lack of recommendations that this thread has received: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4674723

I know that many of you cannot afford to donate to help feed the hungry. But even if you can't donate, you can help feed the hungry by recommending that thread.

1. Other: Why ask for kicks when you're an admin and can pin the thread to the top of the forum?
:P

2. Because the evidence indicates that most people ignore pinned threads.
They don't ignore highly recommended threads.

7. I apologize if I sound a little grumpy.
I am not picking on you. And I know that guilt-tripping people is probably not the best way to deal with this. But it is very disheartening to see how little enthusiasm seems to have been generated by an extremely generous challenge from a fellow member of this community. I know that many people can't afford to donate to charity right now. But recommending a thread is free.

13. No need to apologize, and no offense taken. As far as the recommends...
I think you're right about people not being able to give to charity, and I think that because of that, people tend to just skip over the thread, or else give it only a cursory reading, and not bother with kicks and recommends. The one begets the other.

I've only seen the thread near the top of the page. My thinking was I would wait until it got to the second page before giving it a K&R. I stand corrected and have given it a rec.

9. Sometimes people read, agree, forget to k&r. Perhaps you could talk to admin about it?
Make it easier to remember to do so? Is this a calling out thread, calling DUers lazy asses who just read, rather than taking the extra energy to k&r?

It is a regular problem, people get busy reading and forget to k&r sometimes, or else the OP is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wonderful that they don't feel a need to add anything.

Having a reminder to k&r can be helpful though. Maybe admin could do something to make it easier? Here is the contact links:

I read something I think is wonderful, rec it, then read the thread, then rec it a second time. Sometimes I even rec it a third time, since I'll read a post at home and rec it, and then cruise the GP the following day at work and rec a post again. :)

10. You need an "other' selection in your poll.
Seems like right now it is WAY more important to slam Obama for some slight or another. Might be nice if the circular firing squad could at least wait to form up until AFTER he takes office...

I dunno. When did DU become about bashing Dems and celebrating the death of anyone rather than talking about how to help and how to make it better out there? How did it get to be this way?

Just sayin...

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 02:27 PM by ogneopasno
I see a lot of "K&R!" threads, but "K&R!" isn't enough to get me to open it. If I had known kicking it would help, I would have kicked it, and now I'm off to do so, if it's not too late.

ETA: I just opened it and saw that kicking it doesn't help me donate; it just makes it even more noticeable.

dung to find diamonds. Put it in poverty or something apropos and it'll get read by people who care. Alternatively, since it's an annually recurring event, why not banner it?

On edit: Yes, I understand the irony... this thread is in GD, and I asserted I don't read GD. Sometimes ironic things happen when you follow links.

47. or give it 9999 recommends?
I know it would violate the spirit of 1 sockpuppet::1 vote, but it does seem a little odd that the site owner is asking us for free publicity on his site. Doesn't Grovelbot already transcend that man/fundraiser barrier? I guess Skinner is trying to soften the blow of Gay Holocaust Day on Jan 20th.

51. The recs are meaningless to me.
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 12:53 PM by AngryOldDem
Didn't used to be. But anymore, they're worthless. If someone can get close to 30 recs for posting various uses of the word "fuck" in both the subject line and message field, that makes the whole idea of "recommended posts" trivial.

When I see something recommended, I want it to be something of substance. Not an internet version of those stupid elementary-school lists or polls that tried to gauge how popular certain people were. The rec feature is not a way to call attention to one's bloated sense of self-importance, or self-righteous outrage. Too often anymore, most highly recommended posts do just that. When perchance, I do click on such a thread and IT ACTUALLY SAYS SOMETHING -- I'm very pleasantly surprised.

EDIT: I realize this is kinda off-topic. But I just had to say it. I will consider giving.

52. Honest answer:
I didn't open the thread because I can't afford to make any donations right now. I clicked the "Shh ..." option, above, because that's exactly how I felt when I saw the thread. I experienced a sense of shame because I can't help right now. Of course, like others, I didn't know I could help because I didn't open the thread.

Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 01:47 PM by Political Heretic
Since you have, at least once, banned people who responded a certain way on a poll you created, you can have a big kiss my ass to any polls you put up in the future.

Don't give me that "there was only one right answer" horeshit. I remember it well... several posters posted long explanations of their poll choice discussion freedom of speech and expression, even means dealing with dumb opinions we don't agree with, and they still got banned.

It was knee-jerk and stupid, and I try not to respond to admin polls anymore.
