Fox News: Recommends tipping to give Xmas bonuses.
Recommendations:

Mailmen: up to $20.00 in gifts, but not money.
Babysisters: One night's pay.
Lawn service and/or Newspaper delivery:$10.00 to $25.00

I'm not so sure about the latter.

It's kind of funny coming from Fox.

1. I can barely afford to hire my sitter as it is. At $15/hr - I need a tip.

2. It's called Boxing Day in Britain - Dec. 26
The Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to the Christmas box; the verb box meaning: "To give a Christmas-box (colloq.); hence the term boxing-day." The date coincides with the Feast of St. Stephen.

It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year.

In England, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the first working day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name boxing day.

3. During the 3 years that my son delivered the NYT he usually made over $1,000 in tips at Xmas.
I was totally shocked that so many people tipped from $20-$50 at Xmas.

4. he must deliver in a pretty nice area
a friend has delivered in the same area in NW Atlanta (upper middle class) for years and gets NOTHING from the majority of his deliveries. Cheap-assed Southerners, who have no problems asking for special treatment (oh put my paper on my porch, so I don't have to get my slippers wet - throw the paper up to my third floor patio, so I don't have to hear you walking through my complex).

This year is the worst one yet. And they pretty much use that *extra* for added christmas stuff.

Remember your paper people -- they work 365 days a year!

5. It was a pretty well-to-do area, but I was still shocked.
This was about 5 years ago. These were all people that bothered to send him Xmas cards. Many of the cards contained very nice notes. Needless to say my son was thrilled and really felt that what he was doing was appreciated. It taught me that even if you might consider it a rather minor act of kindness, you can truelly make someones day a whole lot brighter.

6. I give my mailman a card with $20 inside.
He hangs all his cards on the Christmas tree and the kids open them Christmas morning. He got around $600 last year!

:)
