Florida Democratic Party refused to fight against Amendment 2.
I knew there was not a word from them locally or statewide. I get all the mailings except county, and there was nothing. I don't recall a single Democrat speaking against Amendment 2, which was even more restrictive than Proposition 8.

Today I saw this at the Florida blog, Pushing Rope. It verifies what I knew.

FDP offers no aid when gay rights are stripped away.

The Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Caucus is part of the Florida Democratic Party. The GLTB Caucas is angry at the FDP for their silence on Amendment 2.

"The caucus wanted the party to do a mailing opposing Amendment 2 and it never went anywhere,'' said Stephen Gaskill, a spokesman for the GLBT Caucus. "The party's official position was that they don't take positions on constitutional amendments, but this is a civil rights issue at its core...We decided that we wanted a say in the direction of the party.''

...The Democratic Party pays lip service to the LGBT community. THE FDP offers no aid when gay rights are stripped away. The Democratic establishment chooses political convenience over LGBT issues.

The Florida Democrats don't take positions on constitutional issues? No wonder our state is so screwed up.

The Southern Baptist churches actively campaigned for the Amendment. One church even had two signs on their property in favor of Amendment 2.

Not just one sign, two of them.

We now have two groups whose rights are being eaten away in the name of caving in to the religious right in order to win. One is my group, women. When two groups are already having rights dismissed, you know someone will be next. You just don't know who.

The Florida Democrats in the name of expediency refused to help the GLBT Caucus. They did not even send out a letter. Thanks to Pushing Rope for posting this. The other Florida bloggers should be as well.

6. I wonder how often this occurred across the country?
I have been aware of Prop 8 in CA and Amendment 2 in FL.

I hope more Democratic parties took stands.

3. Orange County DEC Did Take A Stand
The Orange County DEC voted by acclamation to oppose Amendment 2 very early in the cycle. It's the only state amendment this cylce on which we took a stand. Some of us attended protests organized by other groups (although since these groups were non-partisan or bi-partisan, we couldn't politicize it).

Also, we printed out door hangers and palm card with our candidates and "Vote NO on 2" to distribute in the precincts. Admittedly, we did not do a lot to educate people as to why they should vote no on 2, but this was more a financial consideration than a political one.

While this does not excuse the actions (or inaction) of the FDP, I hope you realize there are Democrats out there - yes official party organizations - taking a stand on this issue.

4. Glad to hear that. I don't hear much good news on stuff like that locally.
Yes, it is good they are taking the stands. We are not very welcome in party circles around here now since the primaries because we took Dean's side on the primary dates. Maybe someday.

Of course you don't. You only remember negative things about Democrats.

Florida CFO Alex Sink signs on to Say No 2 campaign

AMENDMENT 2 WOULD DENY HEALTH CARE AND PENSION BENEFITS TO DOMESTIC PARTNERS AND OTHER UNMARRIED COUPLES

Florida CFO Signs On to Florida Red and Blue’s Say No 2 Campaign

Miami – Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink has signed on to Florida Red and Blue’s Advisory Board, joining more than 200 other leaders and organizations.

Red and Blue, the bipartisan statewide organization, is running the SayNo2 campaign opposing Amendment 2, the proposed constitutional amendment to deny health care benefits and pension benefits to domestic partners and other unmarried couples living together.

8. you gotta admit, outside Sink, the rest of the state Democrats lack
a clue!

When I get back to that state, I'm certainly going to help bring change I can believe in for the state of FL. Nearly every political situation or campaign I've ever been able to spend my precious time on has brought change - and my oh my do the FL dems need to be replaced.

13. I want Sink to stay where she is instead of running for Senate.
She is performing a service for the state as best she can with the GOP is such control. She can't change their minds about bankrupting the state, but at least she is calling it to the public's attention.

I agree with you so much on most Florida Democrats...They have an identity crisis.

9. FDP IS A NON-ENTITY! It Exists Exclusively For the Benefit of A Few Select Insiders and
To Suppress ANY AND ALL candidates that stand for true Democratic Values. Just talk to Ed Helm, John Russell, Bob Bowman, Dave Bruderly or any number of other ROCK SOLID populist Democrats. The FDP leadership only plays ball w/ Republicans who put a D after their name Bill Nelson would be a shining example. However Thurman is no slouch in her support of Republicans and abject show of weakness in standing for nothing and standing against nothing... merrely standing for THEMSELVES! Thurman so that she can go cocktail around the state on the dimes contributed by retirees ignorant of the whole mess and cash checks from Al Cardenas monthly as well.

FDP IS a joke and I cannot wait to see just WHO is stupid enough to line up for the slaughter and run against Crist. Best case scenario is to set a new record for incumbents unchallenged at every level in 2010, that would demonstrate clearly why Florida is as F*cked up as it is because there is NO debate and therefore NO balance. Watching and waiting... There are opportunities to fry some fish but the FDP will not be any part of it!:nuke:

11. It dropped very quickly.
But I appreciate the thought of your trying.

Yes, it is a sad thing to watch our FL Dems and their inaction on vital topics.
