Alas, Babylon.
Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 11:22 AM by raccoon
One of my favorite books, and now my mental response to so many threads in DU, especially those regarding the economy.

I just copied it and now I'll just paste it to post whenever I am so moved:

Alas, Babylon.

Oh, yeah, I mean: Alas, Babylon. NT

1. One of my favorites also
raised in Florida in the late 50's during the "Mutually Assured Destruction" days, that book was very important to me....especially in 1962 during the Cuban Missile crisis...300 yards from the end of the runway of a major Naval Air Station....yeah...I read the book over again that week.

2. good book
my son saw it on my book shelf and was surprised i would want to read it - it is still required reading here in CT in the 9th grade

Ah the good old days - when you were either incinerated immediately or got to forage for food - either way you knew what was coming - not like today!

Peace

3. It was one of my favorites from high school (1969) that I reread last year.
Its experience of living through a nuclear war would be a camp out compared to what would happen today. I remember a science teacher in junior high school who told us that if there was ever the bomb dropped while we were in school that they would let us go home and die there. Honest, but not quite the pollyannaish attitude to which we were accustomed.

5. Great book, despite the numerous instances of deus ex machina
"We need salt!"

"Hey, this old navy captain's journal no one ever looks at happens to say salt is just down the river!"

"HUZZAH!"

Beyond that, it's a fantastic, gripping read.
