Republicans are happier than Democrats with Gilibran pick
A new Quinnipiac University Poll shows 56 percent of Republicans reacting favorably to the appointment of Senator-designate Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Hudson, while only 41 percent of Democrats say they approve.

I don't think that New Yorkers appreciated seeing a beaming Alfonse D'amato standing next to her at the announcement presser either.

1. Patterson needs to be done next election
Get him out of the office, he shames it more than Spitzer did.

2. Probably
but if those same republicans really looked at her voting record that number would drop like a rock. Other than her NRA score and her nonsensical stance on amnesty for undocumentd aliens, she's a democrat through and through.

The high GOP support noted here is probably just glee that it wasn't Kennedy or Cuomo... and that the current governor was catching so much shit.

3. The Accidental Candidates: Gillibrand and Paterson are done for 2010
Both the Accidental candidates. I expect Carolyn McCarthy, Carolyn Maloney, David Green and RFK, Jr. to challenge and topple Gillibrand and Andrew Cuomo will send inept Governor Paterson packing.

10. There's as much chance of that as there was of Tasini unseating Clinton in 2006.
In other words, just about none.

5. Of course they are. She is from a Republican district and now there will be an election to replace h
Republicans have a very good chance of picking up that House seat..They also like her for her very Conservative approach to policy.

6. New York is a blue state.
If the republican image is still suffering two years from now dems should have no problem keeping that seat.

and the election is not in two years but the next sixty days..The ONLY reason she was ever elected is because she is VERY conservative..

9. She is not "VERY conservative."
Please point out to me how pro-gay-marriage and pro-Medicare-for-all fit into your definition of "conservative."

8. We shall see
Gillibrand is now a Senator for all of New York, not a Representative for a Republican-leaning district. Some of her voting patterns might change, now that her re-election doesn't depend on appeasing a Republican majority.

16. "they" being the NRA? Could be. The gun rights issue is so goofy
it drives me crazy, personally... : )

I have no idea why we can't figure this one out with some clarity, logic and reason... from all sides of the issue. It shouldn't be this hard. It really shouldn't...

15. That's not surprising.
She is a Republican, after all. She's just a Republicun who choses to labor herself as Democrat. The label is practically meaningless.
