1. Shouldn't we be happy that the pick wasn't a white male?
I mean last week we were sure a woman or minority was the best thing!

2. First of all, "New York" didn't pick her, Gov. Patterson did
Secondly, she seems to be swinging more to the left with each passing day. Give her a shot--she can always be replaced in 2010.

3. the DLC brigade will use a little diamond to convince you that she's more liberal than HRC
even though her political positions and votes make Hillary Clinton look like Paul Wellstone.

5. I think she's a great pick. Paterson didn't "sell" the seat to a flashy candidate, and
didn't let Pelosi or Reid (Pelosi did call and whine) pick FOR him.

He's the governor. He had the authority. He made the pick.

She's impressive. She's smart enough to understand that she needs to represent the whole state. She LISTENS.

I like her. I wish her well. She may only have it for two years, or she may keep it rolling--it will depend on how she does. But I think NY is well served by her for now.

8. Not a DINO
She does have one key area where she does not vote what would be considered the dem line... immigration and the path to citizenship for undocumenteds. She is a member of the NRA, which does not disqualify her for most dems... Other than that, her voting record seems very, very democratic and if you look at the various ratings, she is overall probably a little more progressive that the senator she is succeeding. There sure seems to be a move afoot to discredit her and distort her record.

The governor needs to be gob-smacked for the way he handled this whole mess. But when the attacks come against Gillibrand that she is somehow a DINO or a Blue Dog, that is simply not true.

10. I'm in Oklahoma and I know what a Blue Dog looks like
and Gillibrand is not one.

The only things on her record I take issue with are:

Her position on immigration. I applaud securing our borders, but she is dead wrong to not support a path to citizenship for those who have been working here illegally. And her 100% rating from NRA is troublesome to me. I support the right of people to have firearms within reason, but the NRA is rigid and an impediment to any common sense regulation. That said:

Blue Dogs don't get high ratings from ACLU, she she got 100% & 90% the last 2 years.
Blue Dogs don't get high ratings from NAACP, she got 96% in 2007.
Blue Dogs don't support marriage equality, she does
Blue Dogs don't get high ratings from NARAL, she gets 100 from them.
Blue Dogs don't get high ratings from Environment America, she was rated 100 there.
Blue Dogs get high ratings from National Taxpayers Union, she got 7%.
Blue Dogs get high ratings from Club for Growth, she got 12%.

Is she a perfect progressive/liberal? No
But she isn't a Blue Dog either.
