Rep. Defazio puts forth amendment to give 2 billion more for public transit
DeFazio is fighting back, at least a little bit. He's introducing an amendment to add $2 billion in operating assistance to transit, helping our transit agencies stave off painful service cuts at a time when ridership is booming. Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) will also be introducing an amendment to add $2 billion in capital investment. If they pass, those two amendments will restore only a small fraction of the $20 billion Summers & co. cut, but they're a start.

Pick up the phone
Call 202-225-3615 to reach Rep. Louise Slaughter's office. She is the Chair of the House Rules Committee. You can ask to speak to a legislative aide, or to leave a message with the office staff for the Representative.

What to say when you call
Tell them that you are urging Rep. Slaughter to allow Rep. DeFazio's amendment for transit operating assistance to reach the floor

Meanwhile, as Sarah mentioned last night, the focus in the House now shifts to Jerrold Nadler's proposal to add $3 billion for transit capital investments. The people to call today are Nancy Pelosi (202-225-0100) and Appropriations Chair David Obey (202-225-3365). The Speaker, especially, should be trying as hard as she can to make more room for transit investment if she wants to do right by her San Francisco district.
