WTF? This is why I don't like watching TV at the gym. Gore was on
some news show. Well, at least it was a tape of his recent testimony from what I could tell. It looked like a legitimate news show, i.e. it didn't have all the used car lot graphics and idiotic captions of Faux News. And I didn't spot a CNN logo in the corner. But other than that I couldn't tell what show it was.

Anyway, they were showing footage of his testimony and I was getting all puffed up with pride watching him when all of the sudden a flashing graphic appear on the bottom thrid of the television screen. It read "WARNING: MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS."

I was so pissed off I actually saw my heart rate jump. Stupid, self-absorbed, clueless fuckers. I hate when my favorite machines (AWAY from the televisions) are all taken, and now I'm reminded why.

Did anyone else see this? Was it that bizarro conservative Daily Show or something? I mean, at least with Faux you can tell it's going to be idiot news because of all the idiot graphics, but this really looked like it was serious. That's what pissed me off the most.

1. So what does that have to do with working out at the gym?
The same thing would have been on TV if you were at home.

3. At home I could turn it off (or never turn it on in the first place). At the gym
Edited on Sat Mar-24-07 07:54 PM by grace0418
I was forced to watch it because the only available machines were right in front of that t.v. and I would've had to work out with my eyes closed to avoid it. I generally try to keep my eyes on the readouts and listen to my music, but I was caught off-guard by seeing Al Gore on the screen. Little did I know that seconds later they were going to insult him.

Also, since I was at the gym and wasn't close enough to see what channel it was and didn't have my headphones plugged into the TV sound, I couldn't find out what channel or show it was so that I could send them a nasty note. That is why I asked if anyone else had seen it.

I don't know if you meant it or not but your response came off kinda snotty. I'm going to assume you didn't mean it to sound that way. :hi:

6. It came off to me as a reasonable question. Not kinda snotty at all.
You were the one who made it sound like the gym had something to do with what you saw on the tv show about Gore, and it didn't.

9. The way you answered sounded sort of snotty to me too
And your reply to the question of whether it was intentional sounded a bit defensive. But that's just me.

Anyway, I hate being in a place like a waiting room where I have no choice but to watch a TV that has no remote.

I made a point of complimenting the owner of a nearby pizza place for removing the TVs. It's so much more relaxing to eat there now.

I'm glad I'm not alone. However, to be fair, the second response is not the same poster as the first response. Apparently two people do not understand why I was talking about what I saw at the gym and why that was relevant. I thought I made it pretty clear but I guess not. I just wanted to point that out in fairness to live laugh love.

Why people need TVs blaring in every conceivable location 24/7 is beyond me. Especially since those TVs always seem to be blaring Faux News or something similarly disgusting.

12. I actually attempted to clarify that connection. I apologize if it still wasn't clear.

If the response didn't come off snotty to you, great. That's how it seemed to me and, apparently, others as well.

It's up to the poster to clarify I suppose, but thanks for your input.

7. It was the Glenn Beck show on CNN Headline News. I saw it at a restaurant.
I was really disgusted, but then Glenn Beck is pretty disgusting.

And since when is an hour of his drivel "Headline News"?

I used to have Headline News on all the time. Over the last couple of years it's on less and less. Actually, it's almost never on anymore.

Lo, how the mighty CNN has fallen.

11. Oh, that explains it. Thank you. Yes, Glenn Beck is a fucking asshole.
It's so weird to see pointless crap like that being passed off as serious news.

18. I know, but unfortunately many people at my gym were forced to watch his
show yesterday and the stupid graphic probably fit right into their uninformed perception that Al Gore is a boring blowhard who claims to have invented the internet. We all know that's not true but others don't.

sometimes people are snarky for no reason. I understand what you are saying. Television has gotten way out of hand. Peace to you. Kim

2. I'm still pissed at Ted Turner for selling CNN
We sure could use a semi-reasonable person in charge of at least ONE news organization.

4. Isn't it sad when we don't even have "semi-reasonable"? That the best we can
hope for is "not completely right-wing propaganda"?

10. Try TV-B-Gone
It works beautifully. I have one but I use it very sparingly, like when I'm trapped waiting in an office and there's a set tuned to Pox and I can't reach it to switch stations.

14. I have thought about such things. Although they seem somewhat confrontational.
At least at a place I frequent 5-6 times a week. I don't want to be a bully about it.

Anyway, at the gym I usually just avoid the TVs altogether. I prefer to work out in peace just listening to my music or maybe perusing a magazine. Now that I know the name of the show that was on, I will have a chat with the people at the front desk. I'm sure they probably think CNN is pretty apolitical if they don't know better.

24. Or they may be GOPbots who love Beck
In that case, the TV-B-Gone is appropriate. You can turn the set back on when you finish your workout (something most folks don't realize about it).

20. Fox News now has a conservative rip off of the Daily Show. Perhaps that is
what the OP thought they might have been watching? I think it's called the "Half hour news hour" or something like that.

Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 09:07 AM by grace0418
I was referring to that new conservative version of the Daily Show that (I think) Fox News is doing. I don't know the name of it so I called it the bizarro conservative Daily Show. The "bizarro" version of something refers to it being the polar opposite (evil instead of good, down instead of up, white instead of black, etc.). It's a comic book reference.

Anyway, I thought what I was seeing might be that show (since I've never watched it) but it ended up being Glenn Beck.

Get it now?

23. Perhaps just refer to it by its real name
as you are probably aware, Gore was partially lampooned on the real Daily Show last week.

28. Don't let it bother you....it's the repug position towards Gore...
but in the end, they'll be the losers.

Gore is looking exactly like what he is right now: an intelligent, non-partisan, altruistic, honest bringer of truth.

All of the Gore-bashers are looking exactly like what they are. 'nuf said.

ignorant republicans, still believe and repeat the story about Al Gore "inventing the internet" like Al is some kind of idiot who would make up preposterous lies.
