Visibility for your Community Peace Effort!
If you want to bring the peace movement to the front pages of your local newspaper here is a sure fired way. Since December 2004 we have displayed in our front yard orange marker flags http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0124-07.htm in a grid fashion to remind our community of the deaths of American soldiers in the Iraq invasion. We choose orange because orange is the international color of distress. We also felt that 1250 small American flags would be too expensive to replace as they became soiled over time. We have placed small American flags in the corners of our display. This is a memorial to those who have died in the Iraq invasion. It is also a memorial to all Americans who serve in the armed services. This simple display brings the war home for many who do not feel connected to it.

Today, in a newspaper from a neighboring city, there is an article about a man who has placed 3235 American flags in memory of the soldiers. There it is, on the front section of a major newspaper one more time. Local debate has begun anew.

If you have the desire to give your community a visual image of how many soldiers have lost their lives in Iraq you can do it with very little money. You will get television and newspaper coverage in short order. People in your world will see first hand how many have died for this cause.

You can erect this as a ‘permanent memorial’ or move it from place to place. It can be set up for Memorial Day then taken down and stored until the Forth of July. Ours is permanent and we have had volunteers from our community help maintain the memorial over the years.

Our display using the plastic orange marker flags cost less than $200 when ordered on the internet. This is a small price to pay for the exposure it gives this life or death cause. The time has come for all of us to work together to get this war stopped. This visual display will speak to your representatives in Congress and drive the message home.

If you have any questions about this you can personal message me and I will be happy to help you.

Peace on Earth, Kim

6. That is how we started!
Christmas 2004 we just couldn't think of decorating and that was the beginning. Since then we have added a lit peace sign on the satellite dish. It is huge and beautiful and we leave it up all year long as well.

5. Thanks for that.
It really does open so many eyes. It is a sad thing to look at and that is what gets ones attention. We live in a small community and it is interesting, the people that comment to me about the display. Peace, Kim

8. Thank you for your help with this.
I grappled with the title knowing it would make or break getting the message out. I should have started with 'OMG you won't believe what I found in my yard' or maybe 'What will Carl Rove say about this if subpoenaed'. I had a soldier stop at our local peace vigil and tell me that I did not market this concept enough and if I didn't get the word out nationally about it I was really missing the mark. It is such an easy, moving way to get the message out. I do appreciate you keeping this kicked. Peace on earth, Kim

Unfortunately I doubt very much this would work in my community - I live in an EXTREMELY conservative area, and when people here do pay attention to the war it's along the lines of "Gathering of Eagles" bullshit - "support the troops" by keeping them over there so even more of them will be injured or killed. x( If my family were to do something like this, it would NOT be well-received at all - at the very least, we would be shunned or verbally abused, and more likely we would get our house and driveway pelted with eggs, our windows smashed in and our car tires slashed. My brother would definitely lose his job, and my parents might lose theirs as well. To be honest, I wouldn't put it past some of the people in our area to resort to even more drastic measures such as killing our dog or setting our porch on fire, just to "teach us a lesson" for being "disloyal." :scared:

Edited to add: Rec #4 - just one more and this will be on the Greatest Page!

11. Thanks for that and I hear what you are saying.
We live in a village of 5000 in a predominately R area. The first night that we set the flags a car stopped on the road in front of us and said, "What are those, all the people John Kerry would have killed?" It was at that point we knew that we did not need a sign to explain what we were saying. Other than that we have not had any problems. Peace to you, kim
