Rice urges Egypt to reform its democracy
But... but... but we were told that after we invaded Iraq, then all the countries in the Middle East would become FREE.

"Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday she raised U.S. criticism of Egyptian democracy efforts with President Hosni Mubarak, but added the United States would not try to dictate how Egypt should proceed.

"I've made my concerns known, as well as my hopes, for continued reform here in Egypt," Rice told a news conference in this southern city after talks with the Egyptian president and foreign minister. "The process of reform is one that is difficult — it's going to have its ups and downs."

Rice's latest trip to the Middle East coincides with a political storm in Egypt over the terms and timing of a national vote on constitutional changes."

2. "she would not dictate how Egypt should proceed"!!
Then why is she over there telling them how to run their country?

bushies and especially Rice, are not appreciated, more like hated in that area of the world, to say nothing of our old allies, the Europeans. Get her out of there.

Better yet, get bush out of our White House. Hagel even mention that problems that bush is sounding like a dictator. Dictator was not his word but meant the same thing.

7. see (below) what she was objecting to. She has a valid criticism---the
question is if she is in the position (given her past record) to deliver this message.

Madeline allright would have been in a better positon (before the Bushies did there damage).

Having said that-------the US needs to continue to push for human rights.

Rice tones down criticism of Egypt over reforms

By Arshad Mohammed and Alaa Shahine Sun Mar 25, 8:27 AM ET

ASWAN, Egypt (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice on Sunday toned down criticism of planned amendments to Egypt's constitution that rights groups have called a step backward for freedom and democracy.

..........

The amendments include an anti-terrorism clause that enshrines sweeping police powers of arrest and surveillance in the constitution. Opposition groups, including the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, plan to boycott the ballot.
............

The amendments would allow Mubarak to dissolve parliament unilaterally and would weaken judicial oversight of elections, which have been marred by complaints of irregularities. The amendments would also bar political activity based on religion, seen as a swipe at the Muslim Brotherhood.

15. In my opinion, Condi does not know the meaning of Diplomacy.
Condi is now interested in human rights around the world? She ought to check out Sudan, Iraq, China and her specialty, Russia. Sorry for rant, she is so full of it that it is hard to give her credit for anything. She is like bush, she tells you what she expects you to do. She doesn't discuss things.

5. An election in Egypt might not be fair?
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 12:34 PM by Lobster Martini
What, Egyptian elections aren't fair? Just because they've had one President for the past 25 years? But in any case, is this really the time to aggravate Egypt? Can Smirky make Qatar hate us too? Then he'll have run the table.

8. Physician, heal thyself!
The nations of the world can righfully laugh in our faces when we criticize them as being "undemocratic". An illegitimately elected, hissy fit throwing frat boy who is trying to subjugate a once proud nation in service to his vaguely Oedipal will to power has no right to instruct anyone on the workings of democracy. He's a joke.
