House Democrats ready to fight on stimulus
House Democrats ready to fight on stimulus

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took a break from the House Democrats’ annual retreat on Friday to say she is prepared to fight for her chamber’s version of the economic stimulus package.

Pelosi voiced her disapproval of efforts by senators back in Washington to cut nearly $100 billion in spending — specifically related to education — from the bill. But recognizing her words 150 miles away may have little impact on the Senate floor, Pelosi vowed to defend the House provisions next week in conference.

“I’m very much opposed to the cuts that are being proposed in the Senate,” Pelosi told reporters gathered at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg. “But I think the Senate will act upon the bill, we will then go to conference and we’ll see what product flows from there.”

House Democratic leaders are committed to their $819 billion bill, saying it is the best version of President Obama’s original vision. The House bill received no Republican votes and has come under increasing criticism not just from centrist Democrats in the Senate but from conservative Democrats in the House, as well.

Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) now have their eyes on a House-Senate conference — the make-up and logistics of which are still unknown — where they hope to reinsert many provisions that could be removed in the Senate version.

1. In our search for spines in the Democratic Party

the only place we will find them is in the House. We know Pelosi will back down and roll over, but I really have hopes for some of the Members. I think we should do away with the Senate completely and take out the few good Senators and give them highly placed positions in the O'Admin.

5. Did you ever think this could be part of a grand strategy?
I have. And if it's so, I do hope you have the grace to acknowledge it.

13. Pelosi is looking far better these days....Harry Reid has always been the worse problem
because he constantly screws up what the House has voted on since we gained the majority. I don't care for Pelosi or Hoyer but remember the House Voted DOWN the Tarp Spending and it wasn't until the Senate larded it up to please certain Blue Dog Dems that the House then voted it through. The House Dems almost had a majority to stop the Iraq Invasion...it was a very close vote...but Senate rammed through. Just saying. Harry Reid and Tom Daschle when he was there are the ones that work against the Dems in the House.

I'm hoping Nancy will be strong and that the Senate hasn't larded it up in another trick to get the crossover Blue Dogs. Pelosi promised "no earmarks" but caving into the Repug Tax Cuts over spending is something she will hopefully be able to do if she positions it carefully and Obama gives her some cover.

11. I have a friend who bleeds Republican
and I tell him if he wants to read some good trashing and mocking of Democrats under the guise of "constructive criticism" he needs to read DemocraticUnderground.com. Forget FR because posters write better here and most can even spell correctly.
