John McCain Is A Guest On CNN Sunday - Will They Ask About AZ's 4-day School Week?
We have all heard how John McCain lead the effort to oppose the stimulus package, and how Republican senators insisted on cuts to education spending in the house version of the bill. Now, do you think that CNN has the guts to ask John McCain about the impact of the economy on public education in his home state?

Watch CNN for yet another example of how the corporate media covers-up, and carries the water for those pushing a right wing agenda. If McCain were a Democrat, the news hosts would be all over him for how his votes ignore the needs of his contituents. However, I bet that CNN refuses to mention how McCain turned his back on the educational needs of his State's residents. Obama ought to hold a townhall in this school district to try to push for increased educational funding, and dare McCain to oppose funding for his state.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. - One school district decided to shrink the school week from five days to four in an effort to save cash because of the deepening recession and falling enrollment.

The Bisbee Unified School District board voted Thursday to close schools every Friday for the next two school years. District Superintendent Gail Covington had recommended the shortened school week as a way to save $500,000 each year in the small southeastern Arizona town.

School days would be lengthened by an hour to make up the lost instructional time.

1. I am convinced the GOP
wanted this bill to pass. They want the money for their Red (and in debt) States. They just didn't want to give Obama a win. They are truly little pricks.

They can go home to their districts that opposed the bill knowing full well these districts will be beneficiaries of the Stimulus money. I'd love to see these districts decline the funds. But I won't be holding my breath.

14. Yep if we had needed 80 votes in the Senate we would have had enough
They weren't going to block this bill under any circumstances.

This is all drama.

5. Still, Took Place In AZ, McCain Should Respond
Many of the cuts in the house legislation were targeted towards education and aid to states. The article also notes that other school districts were contemplating a reduction to a 4 day workweek, and how working families were now struggling with child care to cover the cancelled school day. Since this has happened in McCain's state, shouldn't he be asked to reconcile his position with the impact on his constituents?

7. Agreed.
This is a very small district. From the article:
Bisbee Unified had just under 1,000 students during the 2007-2008 school year at four schools: an elementary, middle, junior high and high school.

For rural districts this is one way to cut costs.

9. So, Are You Saying Then That McCain Should Get A Free Pass?
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 10:33 PM by Median Democrat
I quoted the article in the post, and did not modify it. I also included a link. And the district is in AZ. So, I apologize if my OP did not state:

"McCain Is A Guest On CNN Sunday - Will They Ask About Bisbee Unified School District, Which Is Located IN AZ, McCain's homestate, which has just under 1,000 students?"

That sounded a bit wordy, and given the quote and the link, I thought that most people would get the idea that the school district in McCain's homestate, and address the issue of whether they think McCain should address this, since the article also notes that other school districts besides the one mentioned may also make similar reductions.

However, I guess I was wrong. That's just the way you are, and I should have accounted for folks like you who read the OP, then ignore the point of the post. So, is all this your way of saying that McCain should get a free pass? I thought I clarified in my responsive post, yet there is still no response.

11. Thanks, Do You Have Any Thoughts On Your Revised OP?
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 02:48 AM by Median Democrat
Okay, once again, thanks for clarifying yet a third or fourth time. So, what's your thought on your revised OP? Do you think McCain should be asked the question?

This is the third time I've asked, and you seem to be dodging the question even with your own revised OP, which you have now spent three or so posts obsessing over.

16. Hey, Gristy, What About Other School Districts In AZ?
I understand you care deeply about this because of your numerous posts on this OP. Should McCain be asked about the situation in AZ, and how other school districts in AZ might follow suit, and reduce the school week.

12. Every School District in AZ is in big trouble
Education and university just got nuked by the legislature and have been warned that FY 2010 will be worse. We're looking at major layoffs and increased class size in a state that was already near the bottom in education spending. Oh - and on the same day they massively cut education and health care spending, the GOP controlled legislature voted to make a three-year suspension of state property tax permanent ($250 million a year).
