New rule! Never, ever, ever leave a surplus for the Republicans to piss away
We have to take some of the blame here and learn from it. If we worry about future debt and try and do the right thing by trying to balance the budget the first order of business for the next Republican administration will be to find some gimmick to steal it all and give it all away to their wealthy cronies. They don't care what happens to the country after that. They will just steal it right from under our noses and funnel right into the bank accounts of some fat cats.

Leaving money laying around for Republicans to handle is like leaving a crackhead in a house full of coke. You can't do that. You just can't.

And just look at the fuckers now. All hysterical because the average person is going to get a few of the leftover crumbs and they aren't going to get any this time. They were used to getting it all for the past eight years. Now they are panicked.

Just so we learn from our mistakes I think we will be alright.

Don

1. First Step...Prevent Them From Ever Winning The Executive
Step Two...keep them from ever controlling the House of Representatives...that's where our problems began in the 90's and where the worst damage was done as far as the budget.

We're still in the midst of this financial mess, thus its hard to see how people current or will view whose responsible, but if the last election was any indication, the GOOP may not have a chance to get their hands on the levers of real power for a long time...if ever. While the corporate media still swallows the horsecrap that the GOOP is the party of "fiscal responsibility", that's not the case on the grassroots...and a reason why the GOOP not only is out of power in Washington but on the state level as well. Quite a big transformation over where things were 10 years ago.

What this time is also showing is how selfish and arrogant repugnicans are. Given the choice of helping fix the country or destroy it, their obstructionism is telling all loud and clear which one they prefer. That's why their poll numbers have remained in booooshian 20's while the Democrats (not just President Obama) are seeing their numbers continue to rise.

The GOOPs big mistake now is thinking this is 1992 and that President Obama is another Bill Clinton. They've underestimated the President from Day One and they still haven't figured him out. The more they obstruct, the more they now help the new Administration. Nope, they don't get it...and as long as they don't, they'll remain in the minority.

Cheers...

3. Can't keep them out. People are stupid and memories are short
They will get back in again some day.

Our job is to make sure there isn't any money left for them to steal when that happens.

4. True...But It Depends On What Triggers That Memory
My parents were depression kids...and they never forgot who created that time. It solidified them and their generation into 40 years of Democratic control of the House and Senate...the real power of the purse. It took for a new generation to come along for the GOOP to make people forget about how irresponsible they were. IMHO, we're at the same place again...many will look back at booooshie as another Hoover or worse and that party will have to play down those years for the forseeable future.

Yes, people's memories are short, but not when it comes to suffering. Who can forget losing a house or job? Just like how the GOOP used the inflation of the late 70's (which I contend was a result of Ford & Nixon's spending) to hurt Democrats for 25 years, the shoe is now on the other foot.

I firmly agree, Don...never let these goons get their hands on any money as we know not only that they'll spend it, but who they'll give it to.

Cheers...

5. Californians are learning that
the hard way. In a movement tantamount to madness they ousted grey Gray Davis for flashy Arnie. And, boy, did Arnie and his friends drain away the surplus we accumulated in the Davis years.

6. I'd be happy for the chance to make that mistake again...
...just to see the economy back where we can imagine having a surplus. Unfortunately that's going to take so long to happen again people won't remember what a mess Republicans made the last time they had a surplus to piss away.
