3. Fine, That's Your Choice
I respect that. Making public schools more like charter schools is NOT a solution.

11. You mean like the CEOs of Merrill, et al?
That kind of proof?

Where their buddies on the board give them the bucks while the ship sinks?

THAT kind of pay for performance?

19. Baaaad example
Since WHEN does a teacher prosper by doing a good job? They all get the standard union rate.

But when a teacher screws up, suddenly ALL teachers must lower their expectations and "prove themselves worthy" just to maintain their status quo.

What other government profession is required to take such abuse? Engineers? Lawyers? Administrators?

There are bad government Engineers, too, but where's the rule that THEY need to "prove themselves every year"????

8. Yes, fuck you Arne!
Typical thinking about students as products and teachers as assembly line workers.

Prussian factory model of education at its finest.

Just a couple of hundred years (at least) out of date.

Could we please have at least ONE teacher in the Education Department? Please?

17. At The Risk Of Sounding Like A Pompous Ass
Someone should take a good look at our Massachusetts schools, see what we're doing, and spread it elsewhere. Our students have the best performance in America on national and international standardized tests, e.g.:

http://www.massteacher.org/archive/2007/headlines_2007-09-24.cfm
http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2008/12/10/bright_sign_for_tech_in_mass/

And what's bizarre (in a good way) is that even though we're already the best, our scores on the NAEP are also increasing faster than those in any other state (I heard that this morning).

The other bizarre thing (in a good way) is that Mass is in the bottom half of states when ranked by total state/local tax burden per capita. So we're cheaper, and we get great results.

I wish for once the feds would say "Hey! Look! Something's working really well! How about we try it in other places?!"

20. Eye-opening. Someone needs to check MA out. And you
don't sound pompous. You should start a new thread with this info.
