Daycare Owner Gives Up License After (accidently) Served Kids Wiper Fluid

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - Authorities say 10 children at an Arkansas daycare center drank windshield wiper fluid after the owner served it from a container mistaken for one containing Kool-Aid. The daycare owner, Carolyn Bynum, voluntarily surrendered her state license on Friday, March 13, 2009.

Doctors estimate the children, ages 2 to 7, drank about an ounce of the blue fluid late Thursday afternoon before realizing it tasted wrong.

One child remained hospitalized over the weekend in good condition. Blood samples showed "measurable levels" of methanol, a highly toxic alcohol that can induce comas and cause blindness.

The windshield wiper fluid was bought with several other items on a recent shopping trip, James told The Associated Press. "This product was mistakenly grabbed and thought to be Kool-Aid and put in the refrigerator," she said.

3. I was thinking the same thing.

I smoke, and I can open up a container and tell the difference.

2. Wasn't there any labels on the container?
The cap and seal should have been a clue, you'd think. Let alone the smell.

7. Exactly...

All the windshield washer I buy comes in bottles with "child resistant" caps. I admit I haven't bought Kool-Aid for a while. Does it have a cap like that? Are the containers ANYTHING alike?

4. This whole story has just never made sense to me.
I know they make Kool-Aid in that horrible blue raspberry color nowadays, but really, a person can't tell the difference between a container of windshield wiper fluid and a container of premixed blue raspberry Kool-Aid? They don't look ANYTHING different? They don't smell anything different? They don't bear a label describing what they are?
