Shoppers trampled to death - The perils of a consumer society
Shoppers trampled to death

From correspondents in Hong Kong

TWO people were killed and 11 injured today as shoppers stampeded during a sales promotion in China.

The tragedy occurred in Chongqing's Fuling District after a promotion for a medicinal product drew throngs of people, news wire Xinhua quoted a district spokesman as saying.

"One of the dead was a 67-year-old lady,'' the spokesman told Xinhua.

"The 11 injured were being treated at Fuling Central Hospital. Two of them were severely injured.''
An investigation into the cause of the accident was underway, Xinhua reported.

This was the second fatal stampede in Chongqing since November 2007, when three people died and 31 were injured in a stampede triggered by a sales promotion at a Carrefour outlet, according to Xinhua.

These sales promotions can be fatal.

7. and crazy religious rites have been killing people around the globe
and crazy sports events have been killing people around the globe. Mobs, when they lose control, are the problem, whether it's at a rock concert or a crazy sale.

6. And all that damned rock music the kids like so much!

On December 3, 1979 outside the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio eleven people were killed and dozens were injured in a crush of people trying to get into the arena. Fans were waiting outside for a Who concert scheduled to take place that night.

Thousands of fans (with first-come, first-served festival seating tickets) rished towards the locked doors when they mistook the band's sound check for the concert having started. People were trampled and crushed before the doors were unlocked. The Who went on to play that night, unaware of the tragedy outside.

:sarcasm:
