5. What shocks me; that smart co-workers watch that BS religiously
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 11:29 PM by upi402
even the non-religious.
Smart people are easy to propagandize. They retain and ingrain deeply, the BS from a seemingly "official" source. Then it's all over. Since they know it, it MUST be true and right.

Because they got praise all their lives for learning things fast and remembering stuff well. So critical thinking is trumped and then any new information that conflicts with what they know, is seen as wrong.

21. James Randi said that the intelligent and educated...
are most at risk for swallowing horseshit, for the very reason you state. They lose the capacity to assess whether what they "know" is, indeed, the truth. So you end up with PhDs who deny global climate change and think that space aliens are kidnapping people.

25. intelligent people also tend to be more imaginative...
That's also how you end up with a lot of otherwise intelligent people getting involved with cults (or excessively dogmatic in their "home" religion). The strange, convoluted beliefs of those cults satisfy the person's imagination.

A person with a high intelligence but who's starting at the wrong point can build incredibly complex mental edifices that are still nothing more than fantasy. Like Bishop Ussher, who originally came up with that "4004 BC" date back in the 1650s for the Biblical Creation: by all accounts he was an extremely well-read and intelligent person with an absolutely massive library of books, but because he began with certain false assumptions (inerrancy of the Bible, etc.), he constructed an entire, internally consistent dating of Creation that was nevertheless complete bullshit.

66. You obviously haven't been around many smart people
The smart people I hang out with question everything especially what they see on TV or read in newspapers. They question what they themselves know. New information is compared with what they currently know and if it's different leads to cognitive dissonance which will bug them until it's resolved either by changing their world view or discovering the new information to be faulty.

If they suspect it's propaganda, it's that much more difficult for them to embrace.

After a Blue Ribbon, independant panel labelled the gas additive MTBE high risk, with no benefit, the newspapers went wild carrying tales of the "latest" study on MTBE.

Because the Masters of Propaganda knew that for most people "latest" means best.

51. Considering that Murdoch got most of his original fortune from the Enquirer
making up shit like two-headed, goat-mutilating alien-baby stories and weekly Elvis sightings, then took the same writing staff over to Faux, it stands to reason that he'd be pumping out the same shyte for the same gullible crew of fools who think it's real. That's the same bunch who think WWF is real, too. Only an idiot would believe that just because the pictures move now the content of the writing would be any different.

Apparently a lot of idiots do.

The only thing missing is the grocery-store checkout counter. The rest of us are still snickering at the fools who eat that shit up.

they drive me crazy. They are so woefully misinformed that is sad. I keep gently telling my dad he needs to get news from other sources, but he is stubborn and clings to the fake reality that he wants to hear from that crappy "news" network.

I had an argument with him about how much Obama will raise the top income tax bracket. Mind you, he is nowhere near the top bracket, but he brought the subject up out of the blue, and refused to believe me when I told him he was misinformed. It is so sad.

43. "They're not allowed to lie on television"
So I was at a reunion of my sorority in Las Vegas this weekend, rooming with my old college roommate. I should note that I went to a state school in the Northeast, and, far from the elitist stereotype, sorority girls at that time were the daughters of middle management and of union workers.

Anyway, she got really angry when I asked her if we could watch something other than Faux "News". Why?! What do we liberals have against Fox?!

I said "because everything they say on there is lies."

Honest to God, she said "they're not allowed to lie on teleision. Name just one lie"

It was 7 am, and the first thing I could come up with was "there isn't now and never was a speed train between Disney World and Vegas in the stimulus package" (yeah, I know, I should have asked her where the WMDs are")

"Yes there was! Didn't you heasr them debating that in Congress?!!" (I wanted to say "because your idiots all watch Faux "News" )

She got all wound up, and started yelling about how she "knew all about my 'leanings' even before she got to the reunion" as if I had just come out as a pedophile or goat-rapist. I said I didn't want to discuss politics, and she kept coming back and coming back and coming back.

They get SO angry when you refuse to engage with them - they're just SO sure that if they argue and present the "FAX" that we deluded "lefties" will come around. But how do you debate with someone who thinks "they're not allowed to lie on television"? Seriously. So I just refused to continue the discussion, and ended up leaving and going off to find breakfast.

God, the damage that station is doing to our country.

It wasn't as surprising when it came from friends with little education, but to hear such stupidity from someone who went to college is pretty depressing.

That's a first for me!

I post this after midnight on a weekday, come back today and look what happened.

I found this on Reddit pics. It's not mine. There's no attribution or details given and I know nothing more about it. Here's a link to find the post at Reddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/all/search?q=img523.imageshack&t=week

It was a lot of work for whoever put this together and I wish we could give credit where credit is due. It's quite an indictment.

I'm happy I found something to amuse some of you and my apologies to the rest for the nausea.

I watch O'Lielly (just to see what Keith will be talking about the next night). The other night I saw at least four obvious misspellings in his various 'segments'. You know, the kind that just sort of POP out at you? Maybe O'Lielly's show is just extra, extra low-rent?

I don't think there's one out of all that garbage :wtf:
