Near Darwin Award or merely a drunk?
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 12:48 PM by uppityperson
Red River is dropping in Fargo/Moorhead area! Still rising further north, with ice jams. 6-10 inches of snow dropping by Tues.

Fargo police arrested a woman who was driving on an emergency dike on Lindenwood Drive before midnight Sunday.

The woman, Vicki M. Bates, 49, of Dilworth, drove her van next to the dike along Lindenwood Drive from 17th Avenue South until the road was completely covered by the dike. She then tried to drive on top of the dike, according to a news release from Fargo police, but was unable to make the top of the 4-foot-high dike. She was then stopped by Cass County Sheriff's Department personnel who saw Bates driving while they were patrolling the dike. They held her until Fargo police officers arrived.

The dike was not damaged and was examined by engineers, the release stated. If the woman had made it over the dike, she likely would have plunged into the icy waters of the swollen Red River, said Fargo police Capt. Tod Dahle. “The likelihood of serious injury or death was pretty high,” he said. “You wouldn’t last very long in that water right now.”

Bates was arrested for drunken driving and for operating a vehicle on the dike.

3. We had a similar thing happen here, young thangs, not drunk though
I live next to a town next to the ocean. One of the marinas has a dock extending out over the water, used to lift boats down into water from boatyard.

So, these young thangs were headed for a completely different part of town, different beach, and ended up driving over the blocks at the end of this dock, into the water. It took a hard right turn off the road, onto the wooden dock, past the signs, over the 6 inch blocks and down 10 ft. They "thought we hit a pothole" while dropping 10 ft, then having the car gently rocking. They were confused when water started coming into the car, not to mention outside the windshield and having boats next to them.

They threatened to sue the city for not blocking off beaches and boat ramps and docks and making it safe for them. Now there are 55 gal drums painted bright orange on the docks. However, you can still drive down to the beach and into the water if you wish.

Glad the river is dropping, glad it is staying cold, hoping you enjoy the snowstorm and it warms up soon but slowly.
