Where are the Navy SEALs in all this?
I thought this was exactly the kind of thing they were trained to handle.

5. They are not necessarily on the ships in the area.
And there is almost no way of knowing who is where. Especially with the special forces.

7. Actually there is.
The USS Boxer is on site and it has one thousand highly trained "special forces" personnel on board trained especially to fight piracy. It has special helicopters and small fast boats designed for just such an event as this.

10. The destroyer that is following the pirates has a SEAL team on it
But my limited understanding of these issues is that it takes a good amount of planning and training to conduct a mission, so perhaps they are still in that stage. Plus there is the issue that if the SEALs kill all the pirates, that pirates in the future will start killing crews instead of holding them hostage and releasing them because they will figure 'if we kill the crew and get the hell out of dodge, the military won't get a chance to kill us'.

11. You have been conned into believing the myth that our soldiers are invincible
As if they were supermen who, when put to a task, always won the day.

15. This is exactly the kind of thing negotiators are trained to handle.
The goal is to get everyone out alive. If negotiators can do that, why would you even want the navy seals going in to escalate tension and potentially end in violence? That mentality is a big part of what's wrong with American diplomacy.

16. 4 snipers. Each targeting a different pirate. The Seal team is in the water surrounding the boat
but see, they're underwater so the pirates don't know they're there.

With their specially coordinated watches, the snipers each take their shot at their designated bad pirate, after which the Seals swarm the boat to take out any bad guy pirate survivors in hand-to-hand combat and rescue Captain Phillips!!

I'll take $30k in advance for writing that screenplay... (watch for it on HBO soon!)

18. Robots!! Love it!
We have to have a dramatic helicopter scene too. I'm thinking the helo Seal team drops some kind of gas onto the ship that's supposed to knock everyone out but of course a zombie pirate appears, who's unaffected....

Maybe the original cargo ship is carrying CIA robots on a secret mission to assassinate... who?(thinking, thinking), and the crew of the original ship are all Navy Seal/CIA spies which is why they were able to throw off the original bad-guy pirates....

I have to admit, the real-time version of this story is so incredible, it's just got to be made into a movie. You just know it.

I have no idea how the real time version of this ends. Negotiations appear to be a very long shot at resolving this peacefully anymore. I'm guessing any and all possible scenarios (including Van Damme type) are under consideration.

It's preferrable to a live video feed to the Internets showing them making their preparations.
