11:00 News.. what a wasted half hour
Edited on Sat Mar-31-07 02:30 AM by SoCalDem

I caught a quick blurb about a new pet food added to the list (a dry food), so I decided to watch for the first time in years..Here's what I found..

EIGHTEEN freaking minutes about a local fire (less than 100 acres..no biggie)

6 minutes on the weather..severe clear for days ahead (but plenty of chit chat between the "prompter-readers")

8 minutes on sports (Bo-Ringggg)

I never DID catch the pet food story..I must have blinked & missed it.

and I counted NINETEEN car commercials..

what a worthless 35 minutes

1. Sorry you had to go through that.
My condolences. What kind of car are you gonna buy?

2. It's probably still coming up
They put the newsy/public interest stories at the top, then make you watch all the rest only to put the segment advertised at the top towards the end.

3. Step S-l-o-w-l-y back from the teevee
slowly, slowly, then turn your back and then RUN!

You won't miss 'anything' (nothing) it has to 'offer' - I, and millions like me who have given it up, promise you that you won't regret giving it up for 'good'!

---------

Seriously, I'm really surprised someone as smart as you (I really respect/enjoy your posts) still watches much teevee.

Kindest regards,
M_Y_H

8. See, there ya go.....
talkin' a 'language I don't know'.

I don't know about the show 'law & order', or craig ferguson

Tavis Smiley, I used to listen to him when he had a talk radio spot on NPR newsradio....he has a distinctive voice, would recognize it anywhere....Bill Maher - I can see the "best of" on YouTube.com.

I don't want to chide you (heck I still smoke, so I won't be throwing many stones at bad habits)....I'm just surprised at how many here at DU still seem to watch a LOT of teevee. It's like people make some kind of 'connection' b/c they watch the same teevee shows, instead of perhaps sitting down and just having a nice coversation 'over nothing' even.....at least they are talking with each other.....instead of in their own world in front of a teevee screen.

I sit for waaaay too many hours in front of my computer, but, if you (and others like you) respond back to me.....it's a conversation! TeeVee is an empty one-way-street. I guess this is the point/difference I'm lamely attempting to point up here.

Again....

Kindest regards,
M_Y_H

10. No response b/c I guess this isn't "conventional wisdom".....
but when has wisdom ever been convetional?

A: only in the mind of a "mad marketer" and the people who believe him/her (those who believe the 'snake-oil salesman')

5. Pitiful, isn't it?
I keep thinking it's just that I'm getting old and peevish, with patience running thin from constant use.
Then the cloud passes and I'm quite clear that the world has, indeed, changed and inanity has become supreme.

6. Our preferred station has a sports guy only on the weekend.
Otherwise they have something called "Sports in a Minute," which essentially compresses all sports into a one-minute segment.

7. local news personalities are the worst
Ok maybe they're as bad as the national ones but in a different way. Their faux friendliness nauseates me. I can't stand their stupid jokes. I hate how quickly they descend to the cliche with the weather. They should can the local news format and find a different way to deliver it. Really, I'd rather watch Max Headroom than these people.

9. What, no Anna Nicole?
Last big development was when they just learned she died of a drug overdose. They have been re-learning that about once a week now, each time like it was brand new scoop. In other developments, a Boy Scout tells what it feels like to be back home after getting lost.

11. And it's the same in EVERY city... it's scary
I have a couple of shows I love to watch but that's about it. My neighbor called me about 10 days into the pet food crisis to tell me about it. She had JUST heard it on the local news. That's when I about lost it and told her it was old news at that point and to NOT rely on TV for news!

Go figure. :eyes:
