How much can you hate gay people when you leave innocent children unprotected from bullying? Look at the nasty remarks by homo-obsessed NC state senator Eddie Goodall during debate on the School Violence Prevention Act (it passed the Senate 25-22 today!). (QNotes):
"I agree, that bullying gays and lesbians in high school is a serious problem ... but the issue of the marriage amendment in our state constitution and the failure to even get it passed or heard has muddied your bill, Sen. Boseman."
..."I can't vote for the bill," Goodall said. "I wish we could do something other than identify groups, but I think we have some work to go in North Carolina and that does include looking at putting marriage before voters in our state and I feel like this would clear up a lot of issues like this.
We already have a state DOMA, so what is his issue?
In related news, we also had Bishops Peter Jugis of Charlotte and Michael Burbidge of Raleigh urging NC Catholics to call their legislators to oppose the bill because protecting all children is a slippery slope leading to marriage equality.
We agree that bullying or harassment based on gender identity and sexual orientation is reprehensible and should not be tolerated. However, there is also a highly problematic consequence to the inclusion of these two specific differentiating characteristics should it become law. In three states that have a law similar to SB526, the law was used as part of a lawsuit to persuade a judge or court to mandate same-sex marriage. We believe the passage of SB526 into law could be the precursor of actions by our legislature and/or our courts to mandate same-sex marriage in our state because it has occurred already in three other states.
There will be a final Senate vote on the School Violence Prevention Act tomorrow, then it goes to the House.
