CBS golf analyst writes that US soldiers would murder Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid if given chance to

File under WTF?

I, too, am a huge celebrity who happens to live in Preston Hollow. I expect George W. to drop by soon.
by David Feherty, illustration by Brian Ajhar

Given the events of the past eight years, once George the Second escaped from Washington, D.C., I think most of us here in Dallas would have understood if he and the former First Missus had moved someplace a little more secluded than Preston Hollow. Like Area 51, maybe, or some sandbar in the Galapagos Islands, just so they could catch their breath for a couple of years and take stock of their lives. I mean, what a nightmare of a time that was to be president of the United States! His two terms must have felt like the rest of the world had inserted the Washington Monument into him and it was his job to heave it out. Although there are those who insist that most of our problems were Dubya’s fault, having spent considerable time in the Middle East myself, I think it’s unlikely history will tell the same story.

...

From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death. I’ve never met a soldier who didn’t love this president and this country, and I’ve met a bunch of them, at home and abroad, in hospitals and in theater. At Walter Reed, Bethesda Naval Medical Center, and the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, I have visited dozens of patients, and I always ask of them before I leave: “What do you want to do when you get out?” No matter how broken or burned, or how many limbs they are missing, they give only one answer: “I want to go back. I want to rejoin my team, to finish our mission.” They are rightfully proud of what they have done and want nothing more than to be with their brothers and sisters in arms, because they know the consequences if their job is left unfinished. Right here on American soil, we will end up with unqualified people having to do the job they have been doing over there so incredibly well, and with such extraordinary compassion. The fact is, Americans in America have been safe since 9/11, almost the whole length of G2’s term as president, and for that we should be thankful.

Edited on Fri May-08-09 12:34 PM by ShortnFiery
We have a democratic republic so, in essence, we have not FULLY had our say as to how both Reid and Pelosi rose to power.

Neither Reid nor Pelosi are TRUE LEADERS. I don't know what hoops you have to jump through to hold those positions, but as far as communicating, or merely RELATING to "the average American" Reid and Pelosi fail miserably.

See ANY physical harm come to them? OMG NO, they are cool personalities and otherwise, good people! But THEY ARE NOT LEADERS - so I'd have them fired and sent out to "political pasture" in a New York Minute. ;)

Since I've spent my ENTIRE lifetime within "the military community" whether it be that of Dependent, Active Duty or Retired acquaintance, I doubt that my views are divergent from others.

OBL hasn't done a thing to us in 8 years. Pelosi and Reid are the nightmare gifts that keep on giving.

They're weak, petty, self-serving, and they harm us on an ongoing basis....and I'm a Democrat.

Pelosi and Reid typify what is wrong with Democratic politicians...and politicians in general. In that sense, they are a more real danger than terrorism or global warming or "peak oil" or what have you.

I think it's suppose to be funny? It's hard to tell. Right wing humor is hard to get because it's not funny. I think my favorite part is the elimination of estate taxes and then calling for 1 hr of PE in school. Because you know Texas schools are flush with money and the best way to get even more schooling is to cut taxes. I say he isn't worth it, cept if a broadcaster wrote that about a Republican congressional leader in say 2005 they would have been fired.

Thank you, Mr. Feherty. Whenever I need to consider the real world opinion of someone who gets paid a lot of money to play golf three or four times a week on perfectly-maintained courses and then writing or talking about it, I'll be sure to hustle myself right over and listen to your deathless pronouncements.

On the other hand, if I want the opinion of someone who actually works for a living, I'll go somewhere else. I'm sure the Network formerly known as Tiffany is quite proud to have the likes of you on its payroll.

This guy is originally from Northern Ireland, and is a seriously depressed recovering alcoholic as well. Furthermore, that line is a ripoff of an old "zipper" joke. (A zipper joke is one where the foil can be changed to any characters you want to aim). He is relatively conservative, despite his attempts to describe himself otherwise. But in realty, in the end what he is Apolitical. He does alot of USO stuff, when he isn't announcing golf. He couldn't hold his own in a political discussion for more than a minute, even probably about Northern Ireland. Attempting to bring much attention to this fellow is probably counter productive. He doesn't particularly influence anyone, and his primary audience are folks that already agree with him anywho.

34. Golf analyst calls for death penalty for pro-lifers and opponents of gay marriage
Really? Well, its in the same article that the OP references -- the article that I suspect most people commenting in this thread haven't read. Are his comments about Pelosi and Reid offensive? Sure. Are his comments about opponents of gay marriage and pro-lifers offensive? Well, to those folks they certainly would be.

The point is that before everyone goes running around demanding this guy be fired, keep in mind that he's a golf analyst who wrote an article in which he intentionally tried to be provocative and outrageous -- he's an attention seeker whose attempts at tongue in cheek humor fail more often than they succeed, but are nonetheless attempts at humor, not at serious discourse and shouldn't be taken as such.

Keep in mind that this is someone who wrote a book about himself entitled "An Idiot for All Seasons"

It goes without saying that Mr. Feherty is not seriously suggesting that US soldiers want to murder Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. What people are objecting to is the intent of his humor which is to perpetuate the right wing myth that our troops all hate the Democrats and just love George W. Bush. Now, if you want to be Mr. Feherty's doormat then by all means be that but I'm going let CBS know how I feel about Mr. Feherty.

I have no use for Mr Feherty, as a golf analyst or as a humorist or as commentator on events. As for whether he is perpetuating any myths with his writings, if he is, then I guess he also is perpetuating the myth that there are folks who believe fundies should be executed for their political beliefs.

He tries to rile people up with outrageous comments -- the fact he does it from a right wing perspective bothers us. I get that. But there are commentators who say outrageous things from the left as well. We manage to survive them both.

43. I haven't read all the article, but this paragraph stuck out as typical Bush arrogance.
George and Laura's new neighbors had a meeting to discuss the changes with the former First Couple moving in. George talked to them via phone and said he would like permission to put up a gate. The article said that there was no reason for him to ask, as...

"...When his father, George H.W. Bush, moved back to Houston, Texas passed a law that gives cities the right to erect a gate at a former president’s residence."

The article goes on to say..."Still, George W. discussed with his neighbors what the gate would look like, how it would operate. He mentioned that he’d pay for its construction. Questions were answered, everyone was asked to sign a form to give the city the go-ahead, and George thanked them and said he couldn’t wait to move into his new home."
