City orders new holiday lights at a cost of nearly $31,000
Sherwood, Arkansas

The Sherwood Advertising and Promotions Commission on May 6 voted unanimously to purchase a holiday lights display in the amount of $30,845 from a Tulsa company. The displays will be used in the holiday season for 2009.

The decision was made after commission members looked through a promotional catalogue from Carpenter Decorating of Tulsa which had hundreds of potential light displays. Commissioner Nita Pilkerington said there were several displayed that looked outstanding, including a $150,000 display of a large Christmas tree so big a person could walk through the bottom of the display.

The commissioners chose a light display that resembles a Jack in the Box which measures 22-feet tall by 29-feet wide.

Commission President Sheila Sulcer said the board wanted to chose a display that was about $30,000 because that amount was the total collected from donations raised from the 2008 Festival of Lights.

Every year, all donations raised from the month-long light extravaganza are dedicated to buying a display for the next season, Sulcer said.

1. In the spirit of Christmas
that money should have been given to the local food bank.

6. You can't raise money for one goal
and then just use it for another, no matter how well-intentioned.

2. One of the things I really liked
about last weekend's White House Correspondents' dinner was that they decided not to serve dessert. That decision saved $13,000, which was then applied to the scholarships which were awarded to kids at the dinner.

Imagine how much health insurance $31,000 would buy for poor Arkansas citizens.........................

crucifixes from the local Catholic church. After all, Jebus is the reabon for the seabon. This one's 12" high, and costs just $9.95. $30K would buy enough of them to eliminate the street lights.
