Washington, 20 May (WashingtonTV)—US Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday confirmed that Iran appears to have conducted a successful missile test.
“The information that I have read indicates that it was a successful test flight test,” he told a congressional hearing when asked about the launch, according to AFP.
Gates said that the missile had a range of approximately 2,000 to 2,500 kilometers <1,200 to 1,500 miles>, but because of chronic engine problems, the range is likely on the lower end of that scale, reports the Associated Press.
He added that it was unclear if the medium-range missile, named Sejjil-2, had hit its intended target, as Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed today.
Earlier in the day, an American official called the missile test a “step in the wrong direction,” according to Reuters.
