Former President Carter to Win Gandhi Award
A | A | A Former U.S. President and Nobel Peace laureate Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter will visit James Madison University to receive the Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence's top honor, the second Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award, September 21, 2009, the International Day of Peace.

" presence in the Commonwealth will serve to highlight, especially for our young people, the values both embody in promoting peace, freedom, human understanding, and the alleviation of human suffering. These are universal values that Virginians hope to instill in our youth," says Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

President Carter's Gandhi Award Lecture is entitled "The Path to Peace in the Middle East." He has worked tirelessly to bring peace and justice in the Middle East.

After leaving the White House, he and Mrs. Carter founded the Atlanta-based Carter Center, a nonprofit organization that prevents and resolves conflicts, enhances freedom and democracy, and improves health around the world.

"As part of the University's dedication to educating enlightened citizens who have broad cultural awareness, we established the Gandhi Center. The Center seeks to advance the understanding of, appreciation for, and practice of nonviolence," says Dr. Douglas T. Brown, JMU Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

"The first Gandhi Award was presented to President Carter's colleague and friend, the Most Reverend Desmond Tutu whose ‘policy of forgiveness and reconciliation has become an international example of conflict resolution and a trusted method of post-conflict reconstruction.' This second award recognizes the Carters' lifetime commitment to improving the human condition through humanitarian efforts around the globe. They understand and exemplify the importance of tolerance and compassion for other nations and people from different backgrounds," says Professor Sushil Mittal, JMU Gandhi Center Director.

The award ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. September 21 at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg.

1. Carter is a national treasure
I could have a hundred "if only's" from his presidential term.
I believe he was our last TRUE statesman that was President. :(

4. Well WHILE he was in office, cafe standards, weaning the Americans off of foreign oil
etc...were the absolute right thing to do. He walked the walk, he talked the talk.
I guess I am in the minority for thinking he did a good job as President.

10. I'm with you
President Carter had very little help from any one when he was in office. He done everything he done in spite of the rest of the congress critters, especially the republiCONs. I liked Carter then and I still like him now and I put him above all the other Presidents and ex-Presidents

7. Why isn't he going to Canada to have a "conversation" with Dubya?
That would be so much more "presidential."
