Ginsberg gives Obama more time to appeal torture pic release- more time for Congress to ban release
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 10:39 AM by bigtree
WASHINGTON, June 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. government has 30 more days to file an appeal against an order to release photographs of detainee abuse, a Supreme Court justice ruled Monday.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg granted a government request to extend a deadline for filing an appeal of the lower court order from June 9 to July 9.

The Second U.S. Circuit Court had ruled that the photos, said to depict harsh images of U.S. troops subjecting Iraqi and Afghan prisoners to abuse, must be publicly disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act.

Court watchers said the Ginsburg delay order gives the U.S. Congress more time to act on a measure to block the photos' disclosure by amending the FOIA. The issue was expected to be discussed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate early this month.

2. White House Stalling
So that the US Congress can "amend" the FOIA?

Makes one wonder how they're planning to amend the FOIA, and remember most of these were the same guys that voted for Patriot Act I and II!

5. Considering that most of congress on both sides voted for the war...
the repukes and Dems both have an interest in these pics not being released. The pics make both sides complicit in war crimes.

Wiki> An individual is complicit in a crime if he is aware of its occurrence, has the ability to report the crime, but fails to do so. As such the individual effectively allows criminals to carry out a crime despite easily being able to stop them, either directly or by contacting the authorities, thus making him a de-facto accessory to the crime rather than an innocent bystander.

Law relating to complicity varies. Usually complicity is not a crime although this sometimes conflicts with popular perception. At a certain point a person that is complicit in a crime may become a conspirator depending on the degree of involvement by the individual and whether a crime was completed or not.

6. More ironclad evidence we only have one party in Washington
It has two wings, though: the pragmatic corporatists, and the insane.

Neither is ultimately an "alternative," however...
