Judge Orders Release of Abu Ghraib Photos

By Greg Mitchell

Published: September 29, 2005 12:45 PM ET

NEW YORK A federal judge ruled today that graphic pictures of detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison must be released over government claims that they could damage America's image. Last year a Republican senator conceded that they contained scenes of "rape and murder" and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said they included acts that were "blatantly sadistic."

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ordered the release of certain pictures in a 50-page decision that said terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan have proven they "do not need pretexts for their barbarism."

The ACLU has sought the release of 87 photographs and four videotapes taken at the prison as part of an October 2003 lawsuit demanding information on the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody and the transfer of prisoners to countries known to use torture. snip

What is shown on the photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon has blocked from release? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images, "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe." They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.

A Republican Senator suggested the same day they contained scenes of "rape and murder." Rumsfeld then commented, "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

1. Yep
And also, what happened to those damning British memos showing how far Balir and * were willing to go to get the Iraq war started? Painting up planes to look like UN planes and flying them right over Saddam to be shot down. SICK!

3. Salon posted a large collection
of images in 2005, along with a series of articles, and they've kept it on the front page ever since:

(I don't know if it requires subscription; when originally published, it did not)

Does anyone know if the images the court ordered released go beyond what Salon published?

5. The Salon article is from March 2005. The court decision is from September 2005
So obviously Salon has never posted the photos and tapes discussed in the Sept. court decision.

8. The Salon photos are not the worst of the photos ordered released and yet they are heartbreaking:

4. I've wondered about that too
Reid shut down the Senate because roberts was dragging his feet on the Iraq report, where the hell is that? Was it just theatrics?

10. the stuff released so far is evil, the unpublished stuff is as bad as
the islamic looney beheading videos.

I haven't seen them but apparently one of the videos is of a young boy being raped in front of his father, with a Dolby® sound track. That's why they haven't been released, the content makes the already published stuff look like normal behaviour.

There might also be involvement from at least one senior government official. Rummy was using torture sessions as a proxy for phone sex apparently.
