TEHRAN: Iran's defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi said on Sunday he has asked the powerful Guardians Council to cancel the result of the presidential poll, while urging his supporters to continue peaceful protests.
"I submitted my request today to the Guardians Council to cancel the results of the election," said Mousavi, referring to the 12-member body which supervises elections in the Islamic republic.
He said cancellation of the results was the only way to "retain public trust and support for the government."
Mousavi claims massive vote rigging is to blame for his defeat to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was declared winner of Friday's election with a thumping majority of around 63 percent.
The former prime minister also announced that he had sought permission from the interior ministry to hold a "big march across all the cities of the country on Monday."
The march, he said in a statement on his election campaign website Ghalam News, would give Iranians "a chance to express their objection against the procedures of the election and its result."
He added that he had not yet received the go-ahead to stage the march but urged his supporters to continue with their protests, which he added should be peaceful.
"I again advise you to continue the civil and legal opposition throughout the country peacefully and in a non-confrontational manner," he said.
"Let us not abandon green which is an icon of spirituality, freedom, religious sensibility and tolerance as well as the motto of Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest) which evokes our revolutionary roots," he said referring to his campaign's signature colour.
"This colour and slogan will unify our nation and be the best means to link our hearts and demands."
