25. Some possibly useful things to focus on:
counting or if possible photo'ing dead bodies and recording where found.

intelligently sharing/distributing tech resources so as to conserve them and keep them going as long as possible.

I'm sure there are other ideas -- pls help!

3. It sounds like France 1968 when the police made the fatal mistake of marching on the Sorbonne.
When police occupied and shut down the Sorbonne, it simply provoked the student unions to even greater action and sparked sympathy strikes by workers in the surrounding areas, which eventually spread into the countryside where the factories and large workshops were also located. The French government, fearing that they could be overthrown, drew up plans to call out the military in case the rebellion was not contained.

12. apples and oranges
at that time France had a huge commie party and very organized unions

they seized the opportunity of the clashes to ask for reforms, better wages etc...

they got what they wanted and went back to work (Pompidou knew it would defuse the whole thing).

the unions told the students : fuck you now, go back to your summer vacations. Besides the stalinistic PCF never liked anarchists.

there was no risk for "armed rebellion", only a little fear mongering from De Gaulle who scrambled with empty military trucks on the country side.

And the commies never won any elections.

Today the communist party and the anarchists have 6-10% of the vote. And considered by the majority as part of the national folklore and a pain in the butt.

France at that time was a democracy with a generation problem. It was the Vietnam war era.

Iran is a bloody religious dictatorship, a terror regime.
If they want to execute 1000 students to show an example, they'll do it.

it's not comparable

39. Could be France 1968. Could be Tiananmen 1989. No way to predict.
If the Religious Police finally got involved and are cracking down, this could be France. If the Supreme Council saw the protests as a threat to their power and called in the army, this is probably Tiananmen.

Thanks for that twitter link...I saw some others writing the same thing. Tehran Uni raided by soldiers/cops at like 3 am.. students being beaten, rubber bullets being fired.

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23iranelection

Other entries are saying that the police (or whatever they are) are now blocking hospitals' doors, not allowing the injured in to be seen.

17. Here is a blog with video of Iranians yelling on their rooftops
Chanting "God is Great". Throughout the day there have been blogs and tweets organizing the city wide rooftop chant (at 9 pm Iranian time). They did it this way so if the riot police came they could disappear into their houses.

the digital transition didn't affect me much. and even cable is silly, primarily repeats the same stuff on the hour. sure they try to fake it with i reporters, but the real stuff is online. or people with cell phones and video. (never had the net during high school, but 7 months after, then I got online. (1995) 14 1/2 years later it beats the cable news hands down. and besides... people can type. :) and read

34. Are you being snarky?
These are people on the ground, trying to get through the night and still be alive for a huge protest tomorrow. As always, eyewitness reports can be colored with personal point of view, but it still riveting stuff and a hell of a lot more than we're getting from the msm flunkies.

37. Most American MSM closed their international bureaus years ago.
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 03:10 PM by Papa Boule
If you're waiting for authoritative reporting from them, you'll be waiting a long time. They don't have the resources they used to have. There is little or no on-scene reporting other than citizens themselves on the ground there, who are using Twitter, live blogging, cell phone video, text messaging and stuff.

And yes, the Twitter and liveblogging stuff has to be filtered, but much of it is first hand, eyewitness information. And indisputable video and pictures. More reliable and real than the canned sterile (and in large part, unaware) news releases from the usual media authorities.

It's a new age. The MSM is playing catchup. And trying to look dignified and authoritative and face saving while everything zooms past them.

38. seriously. everything else is shut down.
Maybe you're too young to recall what happens when dictators crack down. First thing they do is shut down communications. All of them, if at all possible. They started shutting down communications before any votes were counted. And then they take control of all official news media. That's why msm coverage has been so spotty and thin. Some have been thrown out of the country, others had their equipment confiscated, and others confined to hotels.

Apparently twitter is the only thing they can't keep down. The people keep finding workarounds. They've used twitter to organize protests, twitter to contact each other for help, and twitter to let friends and family on the outside get a glimpse inside.
