most (?) young people didn't finish high school. the stats are out there.

they barely can read and write. I'm not exaggerating. nor do they want to learn how.

there isn't any 'up' for these young people. those of us who can read and write are paying the price.

meth use is rampant and doesn't seem stoppable.

cities and states are crumbling as I type this.

prisons are full to the brim.

the neo cons are fighting for private health care.

down and down our country spirals. its depressing.

(to correct someone's post). I usually hold off. But sometimes, the irony is just too much.

Now, my kids, OTOH... they get their communications (written or oral) corrected constantly!

4. pitiful really
I know of a young woman that just got her Master's degree. This sounds nice and all BUT she never learned how to read/write very well. How she managed to ever get a master's degree is beyond me. They must be really desperate.

The scary part about it is that said young woman is a teacher! :( :( :(

How sad huh?

Actually 70% do. Not that is couldn't be higher.

I'd say of those 30% who do not most can read and write...albeit with mistakes.

I'd say the fact that 90% don't know what city is the capital of Canada to be more pathetic.

21. That qualifier says it all - "in some schools in many cities".
suburban graduation rates are upwards of 80%. Rural graduations rates nearly so.

What we have is primarily an URBAN education crisis.

where the leadership has said one thing and done another. There has been a woeful lack of accountability and personal responsibility taken by those who chide and harangue others.

To start a thread on the poor writing and reading skills of the younger generation with a subject line which has an egregious syntax error is quite hypocritical.

Own one's mistake. Make amends, and try again.

24. You don't
More and more everyday we will have an upper class of people who create and do complicated things. More of the menial, difficult and dangerous jobs will be done by robots.

Average and low intelligence people will have nowhere to go for work. Lawn care, secretarial work, factories - even flying airplanes and driving. These will be done by robots.

Not everyone has the wherewithal to do advanced math. Not everyone can read complex material and pull the meaning out. It is neither good nor bad, it just is.

We have to figure out what to do with all these people who can do nothing but manual labor but there are no manual labor jobs.

Educated, involved people would see through the tactics and force change.

50. If they're not motivated to improve then it's their own fault...
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 03:16 PM by Regret My New Name
That is totally different than someone who is motivated and wants to improve but doesn't have the resources... The latter is something we can work with, but you can't help the former. I will also like to say that one does NOT have to go to school to learn. In fact, most people who enjoy learning learn the most outside of a classroom. People can get used books for very low prices at used book stores... Really, aside from instances in which someone has many responsibilities(single mother/father working two jobs), I don't think there is much excuse for not making at least some effort toward improving skills. Of course, if someone doesn't know how to read at all, then they are in very hopeless situation... Although, I don't think there are many totally illiterate people in the states, aye?
