Where in the World is Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC)? He's been missing since Thursday...
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has not been seen or heard from since last Thursday, according to the State newspaper, although those closest to him remain unconcerned.

"Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside," said Sanford communications director Joel Sawyer in a statement. "We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

Sanford's wife as well as Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said they have not heard from Sanford.

"We've been concerned by the Governor's erratic behavior for some time," said South Carolina Senate Leader John C. Land III. "We're praying for him and his family. I hope he is safe and that he contacts the First Lady and his family soon."

Given the decided lack of concern from Sanford's office, it would appear as though there are no fears that the governor is in danger.

Still, pulling a disappearing act like this -- whatever the reason -- is a decidedly odd move for someone who is seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2012.

Sanford Goes Missing

The whereabouts of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) "have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office," reports the Columbia State.

"Neither the governor's office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV."

"Sanford's last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said."

According to WCBD-TV, the First Lady said he "has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where, but she is not concerned."

and went thru basic training, but, gee, somehow he was never sent to Iraq.

This MYSTERY about his whereabouts smacks of a ploy to draw attention to what is likely a standard weekend duty that is being hyped to fuel the GOP base's love affair with half-assed military credentials. IOW...he's running in 2012.

Before any of you get worried about him, remember he REALLY likes political stunts that make him look to be a man and leader far above others....knowing full well that he is....NOT.

Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 03:34 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
Let's see, they over turned the vetoes on Tuesday. He threw a baby fit on Wednesday. On Thursday, when it became evident no one was going to console him, he turned to his old friend Jack Daniels and began his pout in earnest.

He'll be back reeking of stale whiskey and vomit in another couple of days is my guess.

71. Used to live in SC ..............
I lived in SC for many years, job-related.
When I became convinced they were going to need another generation or two to make it to the 20th century, I got the hell out.

But here is what takes the cake as far as Sanford and that idiot wife of his.
They have 4 young sons. So, on the weekend that includes Father's Day, Sanford takes off, out of touch. And his unfeeling wife says "no big deal", essentially.

Don't believe it for a minute, folks. There is something else going on, something Sanford doesn't want anyone to know about. Bottom line, I hope the children are okay and someone with the best interests of the children is close by, because that doesn't include his parents, apparently.

32. Good. I'm glad it's getting national attention on the teevees.
While not monumentally important (at least for those of us outside of SC) this is the weirdest news story I've heard in a while.

And it's a pretty big deal, IMO, for the leader of the state legislature to call the governor "erratic" to the press.....

Please give us some details on what Tweety and Walsh said, I'm curious if they were treating it lightly or what?

Was it just a passing comment?

Did they talk about how bizarre it is, or specualate on the reasons?

Sorry to harp. I'm just very curious. And now since the national outlets are talking about it, Sanford's going to have to come up with something pretty good.

53. he's in rehab and for now contact w. family etc. is restricted -- GUARANTEED
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 07:20 PM by pitohui
she is not concerned is the clue here, plus erratic behavior

sometimes it's necessary to restrict someone's access to family/friends because let's face it, family/friends enabled a lot of this "erratic behavior" in the first place

i know fuck-all about south carolina politics but in a vacuum you tell me a man disappears, his wife is cool even tho she doesn't know exactly where he is, his colleagues are cool even though they don't know exactly

he got an intervention and has been placed out of contact for the time being by the professionals who know how tough it must be to separate a powerful man from his drink/drugs and those who make excuses for him using

you can bet money on it

if it was the long hike, family and friends would be frantic because of the lack of contact, explanation etc. -- if it was vegas, same thing -- you can make up a story when you drop out and do the long hike/vegas (and i have done both) -- it's when you get intervened and go directly to detox that you can't stand around and make all those lovely phone calls explaining why you're not where you don't wanna be anyway

it's rehab

the other alternative is jail and arrests are a matter of public record, we'd know already even if he didn't feel quite man enough to call the wife about it
