Natalie Portman Not Dead Either (Bogus Internet Rumors)

June 29th, 2009 | by Adam Ostrow

It’s been a tough week for celebrities and their fans, as we’ve lost Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and Billy Mays. Last night, I noted on Twitter that “why is everyone dying” was actually a hot Google search term, as apparently the masses think perhaps it’s more than just a coincidence that so many famous people are passing away.

Unfortunately, that’s leading to a lot of false rumors going around, the latest of which involves actress Natalie Portman. The story claims that Portman fell from a cliff while filming a movie, plummeting to her death. Sound familiar? Yep, it’s the same story that supposedly claimed the lives of actors Jeff Goldblum and Harrison Ford on the same day that Michael Jackson died last week.

Another article noting this story is false...

1. in what worldview is Billy Mays considered to be a celebrity?
We're really scraping the bottom of the barrel if a tv huckster is a "celebrity".

4. The death of Billy Mays hit me a lot harder than either Jackson's or Fawcett's
He was far more than a "tv huckster". He promoted affordable health care for all, pushed for environmental responsibility in the products he endorsed, and he had a beautiful young daughter who obviously adored him. You can tell a lot about the character of a person by how much they are loved by their young children. The smile at that girls' face when she saw her daddy was priceless.

People are more than one thing, so your distillation of his life to "tv huckster" is offensive to me. If I had to choose a person for my child to emulate out of Billy Mays, Michael Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett, it wouldn't even be close. I would want him to be more like Billy Mays.

6. If she were dead, I am sure I could find a reason to be glad about it
Like her cavorting with Jar Jar. What the hell was she thinking???

And if I looked hard enough I might find out how she voted for a repub.

Give me enough time and I will find a reason to dance on anyone's grave, including my own

8. I find her roles a lot better than you...
I appreciate a lot her efforts in "V for Vendetta" to help drum up resistance to the previous fascists in power...

And even the line she does a great job of delivering in the Star Wars flick:

"So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause,"

that needed SO much to be said over the last eight years to moviegoers...

Those are enough for me to have a lot of respect for the roles she's played.

9. Does not matter the good, only the bad we can find
All good is wiped out by one bad thing. Sinners all I hear :)

But yeah, she is pretty awesome.

7. I wonder what motivates people to start such rumors
Such rumors crop up from time to time, and I've always found that puzzling.
