1. Oh My God...
Detroit and Chicago. I swear, if I lived in either one of those cities, I'd homeschool.

2. Detroit is self-destructing
It's like New Orleans in slow motion, thanks to the Bush administration. I hear all of the major supermarkets have pulled out of Detroit. Those who have enough money will simply migrate to wherever the food is.

10. I had a temp work assignment there for four months. All the markets were in the burbs.
I think it was about 12 miles for a Trader Joes for my coworkers and me.

3. Detroit is the future of the whole country
as the economy continues to collapse into rubble and civilization itself breaks down.

19. No more so than "how would you know" as a refutation.
I was merely indicating that since I am not the center of the universe, and the reality of a thing does not depend upon me perceiving that thing, the fact that I would be unaware of something that happened after my death is utterly irrelevant.

That seems to me to be irrefutable, not as an argument for or against any position, but as a simple statement of fact.

20. Well, it's a question of philosophy, I suppose...
Edited on Thu Jul-02-09 10:26 AM by SteveM
but no one is volunteering to be the center of the universe. The point is that the old saw that the world would be a healthier place without humans is just that. Old. Humans are a part of nature, and like other parts of nature, have an effect on the world (and the universe as well, I suppose). Since we are part of this world's nature, we need to find out how to live within it. In any case, I am not at all convinced of the "health" of a world sans humans; notions of health are so human, after all.

Well, I don't see any way to refute THAT! And since I was more or less just making noise to hear myself making noise, I don't feel too bad about having been wrong.

Looks like you win this round. :) Well done!

9. I think Detroit and places like it are the canaries in the coal mines.
Crimes of all types will rise as the economy worsens.

15. This: "two or possibly three gunmen asked for a person by name before opening fire"
"Grimes said two or possibly three gunmen asked for a person by name before opening fire on the crowd at the bus stop on the city's West side."

Makes me wonder if things are we getting to the point where trigger happy, fundie psychos are targeting the children of their political enemies?
