The Chris Matthews Show: On Health Care Reform, Won't Someone Think About Us Rich People???

Clearly, the Beltway Bubble operates much like the looking glass does in Lewis Carroll's works: it inverts logic, turns issues inside out and makes the most trivial loom large and ignores the elephant in the room.

The moneyed, privileged bobbleheads are a perfect example of the "MFFY" generation of which Nonny spoke, because for them, it's all about the taxes. Notice how they talk about it as if it's across the board, rather than those making over $250,000 a year (approximately 2% of the population)

BROOKS: You know, they made some progress on the Hill, they got a House bill out, they got a Senate bill moving forward. They’re scaring the dickens out of the moderates in their own party, let alone the Republicans. They’re scaring the dickens out of them because the House bill calls for raising the top tax rate to 52 or in some cities, 57%. That’s higher than in France, Spain, Italy…

No, David, YOU'RE scaring the dickens out of these politicians. With your handy-dandy Luntz talking points, you have pounded into the heads of these craven politicians that they MUST fear the tax increase, that their entire career depends on it.

Never mind that the tax increase is for only the top 2% of Americans.

Never mind that 76% of Americans want to see some sort of nationalized health care in place.

Never mind that even your precious group of top 2% earners are ALREADY paying for the under- and uninsured now with increased insurances and medical costs.

Let me clue you in, Brooks, Parker, Page, O'Donnell and Matthews: HAVING YOU PAY A LITTLE HIGHER IN TAXES IS SWEET JUSTICE FOR ALL THE MISINFORMATION YOU'VE USED TO FRAME THIS DEBATE SINCE 1983. It's not about you guys. It's about the vast majority of Americans who are barely getting by and are one even minor catastrophe away from ruin. It's about acknowledging that health care is a right--not a privilege for the moneyed class. It's about acknowledging that this is what AMERICANS--not you bobble-headed bubble boobs--want.

And here's a kick in the pants for you, Brooks: What does it say about all the weakening of the Obama's health care plan and the public option by those frightened politicos if other countries like France and Spain can offer a fully socialized (*gasp*) and robust single payer program to their citizens for less taxes than are currently being proposed here?

If you were truly interested in being fiscally responsible and lowering taxes, then you would champion single payer, you blind ideologue.

4. They take soooo much and have to give so little...
Remember, that is the top rate on reportable and wages, rents, dividends and other such income.

Meanwhile income from state and local bonds is exempt.

Capital Gains on long term capital gains are taxed a lower rate.

Deferred income.

When Obama entered the White House, he quietly dropped his commitment to revisit NAFTA, and the Wall Street Journal crowed in its reportage. EFCA is being gutted. And any health care bill signed into law is sure to be harmless from the viewpoint of wealthy and corporate interests. Gotta throw the base a bone, nothing tasty, but some kind of bone. Democrats are a quarter inch to the left of Republicans, and that quarter inch won't hurt ya, honest. Well, unless you're a Randian loon howling "A=A!" at the moon -- in that case you're just bound to be miserable.

"When will someone in this society do something for the rich!"

Outside of the $ 10 K credit for new homes, and the $ 4,500 Credit for trading The Cadillac SUV down for a new, more fuel efficient car, I do believe the rich are just totally out of the loop!

Maybe the sinfully well off could join together and consider something I am about to propose.

My firm, Power for All, will establish a whole group of individuals who shall, after receiving monies from the well connected, go to visit many Congressional and Senate offices and offer campaign funds in exchange for passage of some thing beneficial to those of that class.

This position could have the designated title of "Lobbyist(Tm)." And I have great hopes for it catching on!

7. Haven't they given enough already? Campaign contributions to ensure
they maintain low income and way low capital gains tax rates. And look at all the illegal aliens they employ. Doesn't that prove they care about the little people?

The poor, poor rich. My bowels break for them.

Chris and Kathleen Matthews "at Home in Nantucket Island:"Lifestyles of Rich & Famous

It’s hard to imagine that Kathleen and Chris Matthews, who purchased Joan Bingham’s modest Nantucket-style shingled house on the dunes, ever have time for weekend getaways. Still, the broadcasting power couple somehow manage to regularly retreat to their new home away from home, a major feat given that Kathleen anchors ABC-7 news at Five, hosts “Capital Sunday,” and is working on a new prime time news magazine while her husband is busy with his new “Chris Matthews Show” in addition to hosting MSNBC’s “Hardball.”

When we caught up with the busy couple, Chris was being quizzed on American History poolside by his 16 year-old daughter Caroline who has turned their mutual love of history into a “friendly competition” that makes Advance Placement preparations a wee bit more fun. Whew! No rest for the weary. Meanwhile, in between photos, Kathleen managed to entertain Wayne and Catherine Reynolds and Gahl Burt who stopped by for lunch.

While Kathleen was teaching her course, “Tower of Babble: Making Sense of News in the New Millennium,” at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, she and Chris, a native Philadelphian, rediscovered Nantucket where they honeymooned 25 years ago. Asked whether they have animated political discussions at home, Kathleen responds, “We have our sparks that fly.” The couple certainly keep the sparks flying on the Washington social scene while helping their many charitable causes, including the Catholic Charities Foundation, Shakespeare Theatre, Black Student Fund and Girl Scouts, among others…
