Crowley pleased by president's phone call
Crowley pleased by president's phone call
Email|Link|Comments (0) July 24, 2009 03:52 PM
By Brian MacQuarrie, Globe Staff

Shortly after the surprise phone call, Sergeant James M. Crowley told a fellow officer that President Obama expressed regret for jumping to conclusions and commenting that Cambridge police had "acted stupidly."

The call pleased Crowley, according to the colleague, a veteran officer who asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak publicly about the issue. Crowley told his fellow officer that he joked with the president.

"Jimmy said, 'I'd be happy to come to the White House and sit down with you and Gates and have a beer,' " the veteran Cambridge officer said. "The president said he was acceptable to that."

Crowley also asked President Obama if he could use his influence to oust the news media from his front lawn in Natick. "The president said, 'I can't get them off my front lawn,' and Jimmy said, 'Well, your lawn is a lot bigger than my lawn,' " the officer's colleague said.

9. Well, you can at least say Obama appears to be civil about this.
Perhaps the DU elites could learn something from him. ;)

31. We can all learn from Obama's lead
Especially those on the right.

Somehow I don't see the right changing, though. That's what being a conservative is all about. You throw the baby out and conserve the bathwater.

2. ....acceptable to that....
I'm certain that Obama didn't use that phrase.

I'm guessing "amenable" is outside the colleague's vocabulary.

21. Now this is a good thing....
I hope Professor Gates accepts the offer to have a "group visit" at the White House. Oh yea, this is how peace is made. I do hope the Officers cop-partner attends as well.

35. My thoughts exactly.
Obama needed to stay out of the entire issue as a President. He's now under higher standards that mear mortal man....he is still withing the learning curve.

3. Good. The sooner those three can sit down, have a beer and laugh, the sooner the media has to STFU.
And actually focus on real issues.

I am rapidly moving to the point where I see them as the problem here, more than the Republicans. How can you blame the Republicans for doing what they do when nobody ever holds them to a higher standard? When they never get media pressure? Taking off my Democrat hat entirely, this country worked for a long time as a sort of dialectic process, with competing ideas, accurately elucidated by the media being evaluated and chosen by the public. But this well working machine has been entirely shut down by the media not doing its job. I believe its actually screwing up our country at a level deeper than partisanship. I feel like the time is really ripe for somebody in the media world to take this thing by the horns, and give us a new kind of media, a long term kind of media that even if it doesn't focus on the latest piece of gossip, tells us the things we really need to know so we will learn to love it. Its really about helping the country out.

Instead of the other way around, like President Dumbfuck in 2001-2009.

16. Crowley and Gates can learn a lot from Obama.
He said something stupid and jumped to conclusion, now he's coming out apologizing and saying he was wrong.

Now Crowley needs to call Gates and apologize for how the situation escalated.

and Gates needs to apologize to Crowley for how the situation escalated as well.

17. This is an example of how smart Obama really is.
It also shows how he will work with countries that are at each others throat. Both Gates and Crowley will be forced to face each other. They will have to admit that they both made mistakes and each will be a better man. Of course the Republicans will not accept the outcome of the meeting.

I knew before I read it that they would all meet at the White House ..am I psychic?..no, I just know the PO's history after reading about him for the last two years.

And, this all had to happen just the way it did.
