people unable to donate, check in here...
some of us (like me, unemployed since december) are not in a position to donate but support the site wholeheartedly.

If you are in a similar situation, check in here.

(the reason I do this, is SOMETIMES during a fund drive, people who have donated hold it against those who havent during discussions, assuming nondonators are doing so for political, rather than personal finance, reasons.)

3. For the past two years people have kept my star alive.
This year I hope to make a small donation of my own to keep the star. It won't be as much as I think the site is worth, but I can only afford so much since I'm now on disability and my wife is down to part-time hours.

6. My heart is with DU, my pocketbook not as much.
After finally finding a job after a year of unemployment in July of last year, I was laid off in March. Long story but haven't found a job yet and times are tight. Things will get better, I am counting on Obama.

8. Thank you for posting this thread.
I always feel like a creap when I post with no star. Here is the reason. I lost my job 2years ago and can not seem to find work that I can physically do. I have arthritis and multiple heart problems along with the BIG problem (employment wise) of being 58 years old. Lost my home to forclosure last January. Hubby and I currantly live in a small trailer. Due to a 24 hour hospital stay and recieving a stent for a 99.9 % blockage we have a $42000 medical bills. That left me with 1 blockage of 50% and one of 70%, which kind of slows me down.Medicaid is "frozen" here in MI,so there is no help there. I thank God every day that hubby has a fairly decent job,but money is very tight. Thank you for giving me a thread to vent my reason for not donating at this time. I love DU, it is my "home" and sometimes my sanity.

17. Well, I just tried and messed it up--
as you are donating it gives you the option to donate your star to another user, but I clicked through the pages too quickly and missed it--it's on the same page that asks whether or not you want to be sent a bumper sticker (the option to donate a star to another user is above that).

Go through the process slowly and you won't miss it.

18. I am a military widow...living on a military pension of $880.00 a month..
And in case you all don't know it..Congress voted away widows Social Security because they claim if we get a check from the military retirement..we cannot have Social Security as well. We can have one or the other, but not both.
Even though my husband and I both worked for over 20 years OUTSIDE the military after he retired after 20 years in the military...I cant claim it.
So sorry DU...I love this site but I cannot donate and if the cost of living keeps going up I soon will have to chose between heat or food this winter. Still I am luckier than many Americans at this time. At least if I end up living in a dipsy dumpster I will be able to buy some food which is luckier than many. :P

20. Too Little Money
I'd really like to contribute.

But I have too little money.

I am over-extended on my credit cards, primarily because I am forced to use them just to buy groceries.

I'll try to set aside a small contribution, and send it in, though.

I just cannot afford to send very much.

I am working on getting you a star, but it is taking forever for the member list page to load so I can give you one. I'll let you know if it finally loads. (I have some trouble with pages loading slowly or not at all sometimes.)

(I am trying to welcome you with a star--but that page keeps loading but never actually loads! I will give it 10 minutes more, and then I will squawk to Skinner and ask him how to donte a star to you without having to load that page.)

It's 1:00 a.m. now, and the page just won't load. I have emailed Skinner to ask what procedure to follow to give you a star when the page that is supposed to enable that won't load. I promise I will make sure you have one sometime tomorrow, after I hear back from him. Then you will have access to all the useful function of the site.

31. At the risk of whing...
I was once a proud member and donor to DU (under a different name). Then almost 3 years ago our finances went down the drain. Husband's business dried up and we were struggling. About a year of that and, just as we found out my husband had cancer, I lost my job. A year of paying COBRA rates to get him treated and coming close to losing our house several times has left us really devastated. I feel guilty spending what little we do manage to earn on an internet connection. But, right now, it's my life line. I feel so bad when I see the pleas for donations but we just don't have it. Hope this changes some day.

I also hold a grudge against the Chic Special Interest Squads, who do the very same thing that town hall protesters do. As long as that is acceptable, then the DU doesn't need anymore of my money.

A couple weeks without any work and/or only manage to get in 4 hrs. of work a week. And I have to stay attached to the phone to get what I do get, and I'm not paid for being on call either.

Jack Cafferty asked today what people thought about the City of Chicago cutting city workers out of days of work, which didn't amount to two weeks off for the whole time. I thought... Hell, that would be great to still get that much work.

80. My last donation is still good for awhile
But it could be my last for a long time. My entire unit in UC Berkeley is being laid off along with many more all across the campus. Fortunately for me I have another job on campus so I'm not facing total unemployment, but that may just merely slow the descent. They're centralizing all the administrative work with a fraction of the manpower for the research departments, ostensibly because of the financial crisis in California, but it's one of their Corporate make-overs. Again they win the perfect trifecta. They can cut costs, get rid of hundreds of people (and having to pay out those salaries, health insurance, and retirements) while at the same time giving themselves raises because they're taking on 'more' responsibility, and they can break the unions at the same time. The Bush legacy continues. Ahrnold has done a great job.

I figure I can at least contribute my input to this site. I love DU and DUers and the opportunity to contribute is a priceless gift.

87. I decided to "be the media" in our region but have sacrified income
to make it happen. Our site is wildly successful in circulation - over 5 million hits in 11 months, 12,000 new readers last month alone. We're covering progressive issues seriously for the first time in our conservative area - and surprisingly winning support not only from liberals, but a lot of Republicans who appreciate hearing all sides on the issues and many are being persuaded to change their views. We're actually getting support from surprising places - an NBC TV station that's teamed up with us on joint reporting, an Indian tribe that's sponsoring our free wildfire alerts, various nonprofits and even a Chamber of Commerce that likes our "green business" stories. You can check out our nonpartisan, nonprofit site here: www.eastcountymagazine.org.

Money is still tight, as we're not earning enough yet for me to pay myself a salary. But we're making a big difference here in our community.

So hope I'll be forgiven for not donating. With almost no income, one kid in college and another who just graduated and moved home with no job, we don't have any extra money to spare.

Keep up the good work.

88. That would be me.
Longtime member, since about 2001 or maybe 2002 I don't really recall. I know my post count isn't much to speak of, but I don't usually post unless I feel I have something important to add. Still this site is the first one I go to every morning to catch up on the latest news and peruse the commentary. As far as donations go I too have monetary issues. I've been scrimping and saving since my husband passed away in 2006. Not to mention the fact that I got laid off from my job last month. But I'll survive. :)
Still and all I just posted this as a shout out to all my fellow DU'ers to say "Thanks for being there and keeping me sane!" :hi:

127. I've been more unemployed than employed
since 2002. What was *supposed* to be my retirement savings is wiped out. I'm back in school studying medical lab technology, but the advisor lied to me early on, causing the education to take a year longer than I'd planned for. I'm borrowing the maximum stafford loans, but that's not enough to cover room/board-type living expenses. Private ed loans are no longer available unless you have enough income to not need them. My house is for sale, but not one person has actually come to see it yet. And I just got fired w/out cause or notice (and replaced by a couple 20 year olds with inside connections) from Subway, where I was getting just enough to tide me over until a tax rebate and the stafford loans arrive.

But I do have hope, as I have a provisional offer, pending background check, for parttime work at a finance company that moved up here last year.

The background check, btw, is being conducted by either an H1B or has been outsourced to India. I know this because a guy with accent called 2 weeks ago around "mistakes" on my application (he misread a '5' for '3' and was concerned that I said I worked at a place -2/07 when in fact my last day was 3/1/07 :eyes:).

145. No work, people to support, medical to expire soon
for the first time in my life. People I love are suffering due to the many easy-to-fool voters. It feels so helpless and powerless.

Fuck the Corporate Dems and Republicans. I wish them ill.

Being right all along about all the BS media and policy does not feel good at all, I can tell you that much. I marched, donated, wrote then emailed, was a delegate here and there- anything I could do for decades -to prevent what's about to happen. And still, folks even on DU spew the BS lines like quasi Fox viewers.

Nope, I don't want a signed copy of Hillary's book. No thanks. She's not welcome at our house either. Republicans in the former democratic party are a significant part of the problem.

146. Oh good -- I am happy for this thread. I have cancer and I do not work because of my illness -- I am
merely 36 tears old and this damn cancer thing took my life away from me. I was an academic before, studying medieval history. So I am not able to donate because I no longer work and have minimal income from disability.

And damn it, do I ever care about health care reform! It's one of the reasons my husband and I proudly voted for Obama.

I'm still looking for a job, had a bunch of interviews but no offers.

Once I get a job I will donate to DU like I have in the past.

152. I'm financially strained as it is.

(It's been great being back and enjoying DU again. It's been a long time.)

Paying off an old past-due tuition debt so that I could return to the University I've been away from for two years wiped out anything approaching discretionary funding for the near future - between it and my normal monthly expenses my finances are *completely* deflated right now. Down the road should hopefully be a different story, but right now a DU donation just doesn't make financial sense for me.

162. Thank you from another poor soul.
I donate to DU once a year, and that's a stretch for this minimum wage, part-time employee with no health insurance. I always feel guilty for not doing more.
Even during the last election, I could only give a little to the Obama campaign (although I DID give a little time, as well). But I was deluged via the phone for money several times a week - and I just couldn't help. Felt like a heel, though.

163. I would like to donate ..
but my husband and I are retired and living on a pension which runs out before our need for food and medicine most months. This is one of those times. To pay for the mortgage we had to go deep in the hole and are overdrawn at the bank until the first of September. We are swamped with medical bills we will never be able to pay. They will just have to ruin what credit we have left and whatever else they need to do. I can't help them or even give them an idea when there will be a way to pay them. At this point I am too stunned to care. My husband is still very sick and no one knows if he will ever recover entirely.

Basically we hunker down and wait out the end of the month when the bank freezes our accounts because we can't deposit to clear the overdraft and then they take their check charges out on the first of the next month so the cycle begins all over again. There is nothing political or critical about most of us when we can't donate, we're just too poor sometimes for any amount of discretionary spending. If the grocery store didn't wait a week or so before they processed their checks, we would have serious trouble buying food. I'm sure that our position is not unique. Thanks to Bush we are all doing without a lot of the things we took for granted before. We just have to believe it will pass and that things will get better while we are alive to see it. If not, it won't matter anyway. We won't know.
