‘Prolonged diapering’ revealed as ‘enhanced interrogation technique’

"A CIA inspector general report released Monday in a less-redacted version reveals that “prolonged diapering” was on the agency’s list of approved “enhanced” interrogation techniques. The revelation is in Appendix F, included in the IG’s report on page 149, as part of a set of guidelines for “medical and psychological support to detainee interrogations.” The document is dated Sept. 4, 2003.

4. Italian Fascists used a technique like this - the castor oil treatment.

So you have snatched some professor or newspaper editor or former political official out of their home in the middle of the night, and you want to find out all they know about other enemies of the state before you kill them. First you rough them up to let them know what they're in for. Then you interrogate them night and day under a hot lamp to wear down their psychological defenses. And as you do, between savage beatings, you force them to drink castor oil, which is a laxative. Torturers don't give bathroom breaks, so the subject who is struggling not to spill secrets and get others killed also is struggling from moment to moment not to shit their pants. They shit their pants. They shit themselves inside out. You taunt them them about this mercilessly and tell them how disgusting they are. They have lost control over their excreta - the first dignity a child acquires on the way to growing up. They're alone, frantic with exhaustion and pain, terrified by their likely approaching death, and now covered in shame and shit. They have been reduced to toddlers who are completely in their parents' power and are powerless over themselves. They have fallen further than they imagined was even possible. It's hard to take a morally superior tone with your interrogators when you're reeking in your own shit. Their resistance should be approaching its weakest.
