Group Cites Positive Responses As Reason For Change

A controversial billboard put up by PETA in Jacksonville will be changed -- but not because of complaints.

The animal rights group said on Monday it will change the billboard, located along Atlantic Boulevard near Kernan Boulevard, after receiving positive responses, WJXT-TV reported.

The original PETA billboard urges people to "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian."

Critics said it compares overweight women to the sea mammals.

"I think it's rather rude," a woman said. "Yeah we all need to be a little bit healthier and exercise a little bit more, but that sign is very rude."

PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said they received positive calls, too, citing that as the reason for bringing down the controversial sign.
