Supreme Court: Catholic abuse documents can't stay sealed
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 06:03 PM by usregimechange
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against a Roman Catholic diocese in Connecticut, saying that thousands of documents that were generated by lawsuits against priests for alleged sexual abuse cannot remain sealed.

The top U.S. court on Tuesday denied the Bridgeport diocese's request to continue a stay on the release of the papers until the full court decides whether to review the case.

Update: Justice Ginsberg denied the continuation of a stay that would have kept them sealed until the full court rules. Diocese may ask the full court to rule on the request.

10. Well, technically just Justice Ginsberg.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg on Tuesday denied the Bridgeport diocese's request to continue a stay on the release of the papers until the full court decides whether to review the case.

Ralph Johnson III, a lawyer for the diocese, said church officials were considering whether to ask all nine justices to rule on the request.

12. The Catholic Majority on the Supreme Court has not ruled on this.
It was a single justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
