Poll question: What do you do if you see your job posted in the newspaper or on Craigslist.

You've been at the job for 12 years and you're at the top of the payscale. Even though it has no benefits, its a steady job and you've never had a bad review. Your manager is fairly new, however, and one of your co-workers was replaced recently for no apparent reason. There is no union.

(This is happening to someone I know and he is sure its his job.)

Post an ad in the local newspaper and Craig's List advertising your manager's position. Hopefully your manager will see it, think he is about to be fired, and find a job elsewhere. Hey, if you are going to lose your job you might as well be a little mischievous.

14. Is it a right to work state or is it a state where there are layoff laws?

In a right to work state, there's really very little recourse - except the employer has to take the unemployment hit if he lays a worker off without cause.
In states like California where there needs to be a "cause" to let someone go, the manager has to actually get rid of the position if there's no cause other than he wants to cut costs, and then the replacement position has to be sufficiently different that the employee is not qualified for it.
Whatever your friend does, he shouldn't quit unless he has another job (that pays better and is more secure) already lined up. Let the employer get rid of him, because he may have legal recourse if the employer is already advertising for a replacement. Check with the state's EEO.

Also, to mess with the manager, your friend might want to ask the question - "hey, I saw this position advertised - is the business expanding and they're expecting to need additional people to work for me?"
