How far gone do you feel America to be? I have to admit I'm a bit scared....
Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 04:42 AM by Locut0s
As I've posted elsewhere being a Canadian with little personal experience I'm finding it difficult to get an accurate picture of just how far down the rabbit hole America has gone. I don't live there, I don't have any feel for what the day to day atmosphere is like down there. My only sources are Internet forums, blogs, news feeds and the like. I'm not fooled into believing that the largely right leaning "mainstream" media represents the average American. However I also can't deny the facts that people like Glenn Beck and other right wing talk show hosts have rabid followers in the millions. The fact that someone like Beck can foam at the mouth about complete nonsense over someone like Van Jones then have the administration accept his resignation only days latter is worrisome. The fact that one of the brightest lights in decades to be elected to the Presidency can turn in a matter of months from shinning beacon of reform to possibly a pharmaceutical lobbyist is somewhat terrifying. Cause that's basically what you will have if you pass the health care bill it looks like you will end up passing. The scary thing is that the solutions that would lead to REAL sweeping change are so far off the table that they can't even be whispered about in serious public discourse. Solutions like doing away with your 2 party system. Solutions like rewriting the rules on lobbying and special interests from the ground up. Solutions like rewriting the books on the insurance industry. Solutions like REAL caps and regulations on wall street. Solutions like marijuana legalization and an end to the war on drugs. Solutions like national legalization of gay marriage. Solutions like those America was founded on. The greater part of me wants to laugh at your right wing fringe. But a significant part of me is more terrified of them now than when they were in power NOT because they pose a greater threat now but because the left can't seem to get their act together even when they've been handed the proverbial keys.

3. Seriously I was watching a Glenn Beck video on youtube and this is all I could hear:
Glenn Beck: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah pinko commie basterd blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah negro blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah children blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah our enemies blah blah blah blah blah blah indoctrination blah blah blah blah blah blah....

I put this through my mental google translator and this is what I got:

Glenn Beck: I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

You know when fluoridation first began?

Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

And I can swear to you, my boy, swear to you, that there's nothing wrong with my bodily fluids. Not a thing.

11. I'm afraid what you advocate would require nothing short of another Civil Rights Movement.
Demanding the two-party system be reformed to allow more choices, election reform or even public financing of campaigns to remove corporate influence from elections, and real regulation on Wall Street are things that will likely fail.

The news outlets that are the gatekeepers as far as what is acceptable or not acceptable as far as political discourse are owned by the same interests that do not want to see that happen.

You're going to need to see a mass opposition movement that is beholden to no party but its own policy agenda goals of reform, reform, and more reform. You're going to need something big like the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s/1960s or the Labor Movement of the 1920s/1930s that got the Social Security Act passed and the Fair Labor Standards Act passed.

The problem you are witnessing right now is many groups convinced their members to give money to and vote for Democrats, and many Democrats have not shown these groups warm welcome or have even condemned their activities as fringe.

A real movement would mount challenges against these Democrats, but so far many of these groups are apparently unwilling to go against these Democrats. This is not how it was done in the 1960s. The activists of that era were far more willing to challenge establishment candidates.

I find posts like yours, and they're common enough, a wee bit alarmist and silly.

14. We're experiencing the inevitable social chaos of a brainwashed populace awakening
Sudden and startling realizations for many in contemplating the true, horrific Profits Over People zeal of a gargantuan empire unchecked and unaccountable for decades. Many are freeing themselves from the collective spell. It's manifesting all about us on profound levels- radical weather and economic shifts, as well as perceptions within the public mind. BIG changes well underway that are exposing the ugliness of American "value$," and those who oppose its exalted inhumanity.

15. It's business as usual. People that are squealing about how terrible it is now
obviously have memories shorter than their fingernails. Look at how all of our recent (D) presidents were treated. This is nothing new. The technology has improved and businesses have 'consolidated' but it's all the same underneath. They fucking killed JFK - how do you top that?

As far as the Left being inept, well, I'm not so sure it isn't just a 'dog and pony show'. "I'm so sorry we weren't able to pass meaningful health care reforms so we 'settled' on something that fucks you over and got me lots of contributions. Sorry. Better luck next time"

17. True about my age (27). However it seems to me that business as usual...
for the past 30 years or so has not been business as usual in the decades preceding that. I'm talking specifically about the post Reagan vs pre Reagen years.

21. Oh I hear you, I do like Mohamed Ali's take on such things, 'It's not getting knocked down...
'that matters; it's how fast you get back up' I am sure I'm paraphrasing though :) How far has she slipped? Well, she never really falls all that far from her already tipsy center hiccup! But as a practical matter girl slips faster than I do (which is scary enough) and *that* makes her a proper blousey honky tonk gal the poor thing
