COLUMBIA — Leadership for the House Republican Caucus called on Gov. Mark Sanford to resign this afternoon, a day after House Speaker Bobby Harrell did the same.

Sixty members of the caucus had signed on. The caucus has 72 members and constitutes a majority in the 124-member House. An impeachment would require two-thirds of the House to vote in favor, or 83 members. If the House votes for impeachment the matter would be sent to the Senate, which would serve as the jury.
“Our unemployment is high and the people of our state are concerned about the future — it is a shame that our state government continues to be mired in distraction,” Bingham said in a statement. “The time has come for the governor to step aside and let South Carolinians begin the process of healing our state.”
Edit..
The House Democratic Caucus will meet Oct. 1-2 in Charleston and will discuss whether to take a similar action. Members of the caucus, including Minority Leader Harry Ott of St. Matthews, have called for Sanford to resign, but the caucus has not taken collective action.
