CBS News on UN Summit sounds more like Fox News

To hear world leaders and others addressing the United Nations Summit on Climate Change, the threat could not be more real and the need more urgent to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

But in stark contrast to the earnest statements is the carbon footprint associated with their gathering.

Each foreign leader in town has a convoy of vehicles. Some of them, like President Obama's motorcade, are 20-to-30 vehicles in length.

Does it undermine the goal of the climate change summit and cause the pledges of environmental concern to ring hollow?

The story ends with CBS News's White House Correspondent openly mocking the White House climate change negotiator in a sarcastic tone:

Asked about it, White House climate change negotiator Todd Sterns had a suggestion.

"I think the U.N. should make a pledge to electric vehicle motorcades within five years," he said.

Right. As soon as all U.N. diplomats pay their parking tickets.

What is he suggesting? That Obama ride a bike to the UN? Maybe Mark Knoller should save some energy and turn off his laptop before writing more idiocy like this.

1. I don't care who the president is

If its Bush, Obama, McCain (provided he won)

I want my president to be safe. If that means a motorcade with 20 vehicles, then I'm for it.

Now, maybe they could have the press that follows the motorcade arrive in a hybrid or something like that, but to keep a president safe you need bulletproof glass and armor, which tends to be very heavy, so a V8 or larger engine is needed. Plus, presidential transportation is such a small percent of global emissions, way way way less than .01 percent. Lets just focus on other things.

The President has no responsibility to worry about snarling traffic as he performs his day to day business. Unfortunately, people do want to harm the President, but that should not cause him to cower in the confines of the White House for his entire term.

I was reacting negatively to the sarcastic tone of the piece and cheap potshots at the U.N. not paying their parking tickets, when the issue under discussion is fairly critical to the survival of our species.

But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

7. It is unfortunate that he chose to cover that instead of the substance of the summit.

However, he isn't wrong. I'm sure there is room for improvement in the vehicle fleets and I'm sure they will be improved. After all this gives them an excuse to buy new ones.

It is a non-issue. The convoys are, for the most part, not cosmetic... right?
