That's my opinion, anyway. Anyone feel like debating that?

You're more than welcome to your opinion. You don't even have to share it. We'll understand.

5. Yes,...BUT,... who takes time to actually prove facts, these days?
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 07:59 PM by sicksicksick_N_tired

Not even lawyers do that, anymore, knowing how much easier it is to manipulate than persuade with "facts". Lies, innuendo, fiction, intuition, gossip, religiosity and anything spectacularly negative are so much easier to push onto people,...even easier to shove people's opinions.

Aren't they,...

Shit. Look what an aweful cynic I've become!!! x(

6. Facts are those pesky things that, when you stop believing in them, do not go away
I forget who said that, but I think more opinions need to be based on facts before I start givng them any weight.

9. Richard Dawkins?
Hmm, someone just un-recommended this thread. Apparently they think they are entitled to their own facts after all.

Shall we play a little game of guess who it was based on things they've posted tonight?

12. That's a paraphrase of Philip K. Dick.
"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."

Philip K. Dick, "How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later", 1978

15. Thanks for the tip
I also like the Indiana Jones version, which falls along similar lines: "Archaeology is the search for fact, not truth. If it's truth you're looking for, Dr. Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall."

You want to unrec my posts, that's fine - I can take it. But this OP makes a very valid point about facts being what they are, and someone decided to give them a hard time over it.

18. In a country based on capitalism rather than democracy, facts appear to be a commodity, too.
"Facts" are a commodity that have been traded in for something more lucrative: anything that manipulates.

Like I previously stated, I have become terribly cynical,...some would call it pragmatic.

I have never and would never UNrecommend any post on this discussion board. Neither the recommendations or UNrecommendations have changed whatever factions influence this board, anyway. Personally, I choose to cast a positive vote at those things that either challenge or inspire me,...and ignore the rest.

That's just the way I am.

13. Yes we are ...
Not everyone is going to interpret events the same way. Just because people see things differently doesn't make what they see a lie. It is just filtered through a different perspective.

I don't feel that I am entitled to your opinion, and that's a fact. It popped up on a post when I opened this thread and it will disappear when I submit this post. Good things do happen after all.:bounce:

23. Not everyone is entitled to their own opinion however their's, whether a fact or not...
this is understood easily where such opinions nurture instead heinous, pernicious acts & behaviors that may intrude upon, or disembowel, an otherwise peaceful environ presumed by both right & opinion i.e. Jeffrey Dahmer. The opinions of certain others are more simply discounted routinely by yet others that deem them unsuitable to whatever extent for whatever reason and so...

Opinions are able to become distilled from where they once started as some this & that, some such & so forth, a pinch of something er'other, and a spoon full of sugar into a spirit able to roll a movement

Is it a fact that 'the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie'? No. Is it a fact that while we understand more about sanitary medical protocol today; that once upon a time civil war saw-bone surgeons smoked cigars in sweaty tents piled with bloody, sawed limbs with little regard for the impact unsanitary medical protocol wrought upon their duties & charges cause the improvements specific to same are, you know, like night & day? Yes.

When, in your opinion, does 'a fact' become 'a fact'? In the late evening, when you can't see the sun; is the sun no longer 'a fact' or is the sun only a 'real fact' when it warms your skin? Aren't facts actually facts all along and it's more the case we were unable to recognize them as such regardless of whose they really are, or were?
