Poll question: Which "Capitalism: A Love Story" scene got the strongest audience reaction? (SPOILER warning)
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 07:12 PM by marmar
The Saturday night packed house at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor seemed to cheer the most during the scene where the Republic Windows workers stood their ground, but I looked around during the FDR "2nd Bill of Rights" scene and there were people just sobbing.

2. There was an audible gasp too when Moore mentioned
the "dead peasants," the name the corporate SOB's use for the employees they take out life insurance policies on, hoping they'll die. Profiting from the untimely death of an employee. How low can a corporation sink?

4. If it's key man insurance
I doubt they hope he will die. This policy is for one that is a key part of the company's revenue.

6. I don't know that you could have called either of the people featured in the film.....
..... as key to their respective companies' revenue.

7. No, these are not key people. They are ordinary employees. Women

in their 20's, Moore pointed out, are cheap to insure, but the pay-off is high when they die. He illustrates with an example in the film. Believe me these are not bigwigs. You'll be outraged when you see the film.

10. In order to buy a
life insurance policy, you must have an insurable interest. How could this get past state regulators. And if it does, an insurer would decline the payoff. I'm sorry, I don't buy it.

12. It's illegal! Obviously it cannot possibly occur.
As long as each bettor thinks they are getting a good deal, I'm sure they'd find ways around the formalities.

19. Um, how about seeing the film so that you can talk with an educated background on this.
Or ramble on incessantly on a topic that you have no knowledge.

21. Here's more info. If you google "dead peasant insurance" you can
find lots more. This is real and has been going on for years.

11. Same here in NY - Gasping, and a few "What the FUCK!?"s
Personally I think the most interesting point in the movie is the last line.

Given everything that's happening and the steady erosion of rights, why aren't we rebelling? Is it just all decaying too slowly?

Individuals keep losing things and yet keep truckin' right along. They never see common cause, or systemic problems.

It's a huge shift from the Americans of the 17th and 18th centuries. Reading Zinn's People's History, it seems like these guys would get together marches every other week with everybody in town, to bust people out of jails, storm governers' offices, take things that they thought merchants were selling for too much, etc etc...

These old time marches either had a clear objective to be accomplished, or were meant to be a show of force.

Todays marches are passive, filled with every conceivable objective, directed by and with the permission of authority... people today, I think, have no idea what a revolution would entail.

5. There were cheers during the Republic Doors scene and sniffles during the FDR 2nd bill of rights
scene. There was a lot of applause and woots during the movie.

8. Other...
The scene showing the detention center for children in which the judges and others were on the take.
The center was built with tax payer dollars, those on the take got paid for sending kids there for months
at a time for "crimes" like throwing food at the kitchen table, getting in a fight with a friend at the mall
and so forth. Their only objective was to keep the beds full.

It was really infuriating to hear the story which could have been a documentary in and of itself.
