2. A few messages from the recent years aren't a good sign.

In addition to the Vick story, we have pro athletes shooting themselves in bars, Jayson Williams shooting and killing his limo driver, his dog (while threatening to shoot a witness to the dog shooting) and almost shooting Wayne Chrebet.

There are numerous other athletes with a history of abusive behavior towards women who have no trouble getting a contract if they are good enough at their sport.

An untold number of players and coaches threatening violence against gays or at the very least letting them know that they're not wanted on their team.

Players in all pro sports sign a long term contract and then hold out the next year demanding more money.

There are so many more, but it would take all day to include them all.

There are some athletes who act like proper role models, but the idea that all pro athletes should be treated as heroes and admired is one of the signs of how troubled this country has become.
