Woman charged for having child ride in box atop van

ALBERTVILLE, AL - A Marshall County woman is in the city jail here for having her 13-year-old daughter ride in a cardboard box atop her van.

Albertville Police spokesman Sgt. Jamie Smith said Jackie Denise Knott, 37, of Albertville was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Smith said the child was turned over to a relative.

Officers stopped the van on U.S. 431 and asked Knott why the child was riding atop her vehicle. "The box was too big to go inside the van, and she would be able to hold it down if she was inside the box," Smith said the woman told police.

When asked about the child's safety, Smith said Knott told the officers that she had the box secured to the van with a clothes hanger.

Don't really know what to say about this. I was outraged last week when a 17 year old driver going 90 mph on a city street here slammed into a truck and a 0ne year old baby in the car NOT IN A CAR SEAT was killed. This is really just as bad. Maybe worse.

had one person hanging out of an open window with a box of Cheez Its in one hand and a camcorder in their other hand. There were no alert employees nearby and a monkey jumped in a van full of adults and kids and would not get out. When some of the staff finally came by we drove past them and my aunt rolled down her window so she could let the staff know what they missed.

He was "riding" a mattress in the back of a pickup truck. When the truck hit about 55 mph, the wind got under it and threw him right out. Died instantly.
