Especially if you live in a Rethug congressional district like I do and it is less than an hour's commute to their district office. Your congressperson is supposed to be the representative of your district. That includes Rethugs, Democrats and Independants too. That office space is more than likely being paid for directly or indirectly from your taxes along with the rude staff on the other end of the telephone.
This healthcare debate being waged in Congress right now is a terribly important piece of legislation with an expensive price tag. If taxpayers have to watch yet another large expenditure go mostly into the pockets of corporate insurance giants, they will be furious for a long time to come. The legislation being considered has been crafted by the health insurance companies that have made obscene profits. Any premium relief and cost relief will be temporary without a government not-for-profit public option open to all that provides real competition. The majority of patients and doctors want a single payer government plan, but the insurance companies are winning because their money dominates congressional action. Please make sure your opinion is voiced and in person if possible. If you are intimidated, then take some like-minded concerned friends with you. Let your representative and his staff know how strongly you feel that public funding dictates a viable 'public option' open to all. No state private co-ops will suffice if this is going to be financed on our future taxes. Public money - Public Option. And no mandated coverage for anyone. We aren't cars.
