yesterday I rolled down my window and yelled at some teabaggers.
a small collection (possibly 9 or ten) of "don't tread on me" and "no evil health care" teabaggers were on the corner of an intersection we were stopped at.
my wife told me to roll down the window and yell at them.

So, here is what I said:

"it REALLY upsets you that we have a black president, doesn't it?"
one pasty white lady starts shaking her head and making the tsk, tsk look and start to spew out some propaganda and try to push a flyer through our car window. My wife says "don't you DARE come near our car"
I then said "you know, you've got to stop listening to the Glenn Becks and Rush Limbaughs of the world and start thinking for yourself." I emphasized this by pointing to my own temple,
the teabaggers yells "we ARE thinking for ourselves".

Then the light changed and we drove on.

It wasn't much compared to others, I know, but after 20 years of being in journalism and not being allowed to do anything publicly political, it was a rush for me.

and what idiots, I must say, their signs were all AGAINST health care reform..... who DOESN"T want health care reform?

and, like always, I thought of something better to say hours later.... what I SHOULD have said was:

"Hey assholes, the cleaners called and your white hoods are ready!"

:)

and I am in a teeny weeny town. they showed up at the farmers market yesterday, said one of my friends. I wish I would have known they were going to be there, I would have prepared some guerilla theatre for them.

4. well since they "think for themselves", I imagine they got marching orders
to look all grass rooty and such after the nobel peace prize was announced.

Probably on some wonderful website that tells them exactly how to think for themselves.

5. "No evil health care"?
What kind of stupid sign is that? Who the hell would be in favor of evil health care? Signs like that show that they aren't even clear on what it is they're against.

8. Hey, next time before you sink to their level, bring along some information
Get out of your car and engage these people. A lot of these people are simply poorly informed. And yeah, while you will be submitting yourself to some trashing and insults, you also my put a light on is somebody's head, and have a convert to the cause.

It's worked for me multiple times before, give it a try.

12. Not trying to be a buzzkill
I understand the visceral thrill of giving back what they dish out. But since moving out to a really red rural area, I've found more joy in doing conversions than in simply yelling. More effective in the long run too.

10. Accusing them of racism was the best you could come up with
Couldn't you at least yell something that doesn't make you look stupider than Jesse Jackson.

"How many children need to die before we get health care reform"
"My insurance company is a death panel"
"Children without health care treads on me"

15. I yelled "keep your religion out of our government "
At abortion protesters last week.

Why do you believe they were racists, because they disagree with a black man?
Even more important, do you think that would make a difference, as opposed to saying something about what they are trying to protest.

21. why did you assume abortion protestors are religious?
(just turning the tables on you a bit)

anytime you confront these people you have to make some sort of assumption.

at any rate, next time I have an unplanned event like this, I'll try to plan a little better, to salve the DU critics.

22. My assumption has a sound basis
Your assumption is based on almost nothing.

Opposition to abortion has been historically religious in nature, and is currently advocated by many religious figures.
People opposed the democratic platform when a White person advocated it and in near equal numbers.

You better be ready for impromptu events. Expect the unexpected. Be ready for surprises. Plan for the unknown.

23. sorry, but my assumptions are from a sound basis as well.
you must be forgetting all the racist signs, painting obama as a witch doctor, etc. of the teabag "movement".

your poutrage is selective.

your condescension is unwelcome... peddle it elsewhere, thanks, I don't want or need it.

I'm sure it makes YOU feel superior in oh so many ways.

28. So they had racist signs?
Of course they didn't.

I'm sorry, but you have no good reason to believe that people who oppose Obama are racists. By trying to call them racists, you look foolish. It makes you look like you have no idea why they oppose Obama, and you sure can't create a sound argument against them if "duh, where is your clan hood" is the best you can think up to counter their obviously non-racist signs. You just did a disservice to everyone trying to counter them to sound arguments.

There are what, 50 million people that voted against Obama. You have seen how many signs? Ten or Twenty, maybe thirty. There is no basis for what you believe.
The same amount of people opposed the same policies when a white person advocated them.

18. Hey, it's ALL good. I say throw EVERYTHING at these bastards. Make them deny it.
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 10:30 AM by calimary
Put them on the defensive.

Frankly, I'd bet actual money that racism IS INDEED at the bottom of everything these people are about. It's their dirty little non-secret - because too many of the rest of us are onto it.

Hey, if these lemmings are going to go ahead and put themselves out there in public with their acting-out and shitty behavior and treason and unpatriotic displays (YES. Start calling them THAT, too. Again - put THEM on the defensive. Make them have to deny it) then they deserve whatever abuse they get.

Taste of their own medicine. See how they like it. Or better yet - see where being nice, or patient, or tolerant, has gotten us with these schmucks so far? Thus reinforcing their bad behavior is not the way to go - unless you're okay with getting more and more and more of it - unrestrained, unchecked, and unchallenged.

Not for me! Bad behavior deserves consequences. These assholes have been allowed to continue because there's been nothing to stop them - til now. There has to be a cost to them for doing shit like this - a price to pay, even if it's only getting yelled at by a passing driver. They do it because nobody's given them much of a hard time for doing so. All they've gotten, collectively anyway, has been reinforcement, and attention, from the media and elsewhere, and avoidance or silence from people who SHOULD be more active in-yer-face opponents. How 'bout they get some in-yer-face coming back at them for a change?

And they won't stop unless and until we MAKE them stop. They're not gonna do it voluntarily.

No sane person is against healthcare reform.

Being against the healthcare reform that Obama is trying to provide for is, is simply a way to disguise (yet promote) their racist ways.

racist bastards all of them.
