1. ugh
And on a side note. If this quote from Ghandi is true...
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
then a lot of Asian countries I have been to are in a heap of trouble.

2. it broke my heart.

and will do so for the rest of the day.
but, than, there will be some who think non human animals arent worth caring about, dont feel, dont mind being slaughtered.
Until we extend compassion to our non human brothers and sisters , we are a lesser species than they are.
someone once told me
"animals are the eyes of god put here to remind us of unconditional love"

5. That happened with our cats many years ago
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 07:52 AM by HamdenRice
This was like 20 years ago. My family had three semi-outdoor cats. One was run over. My father scooped up the body, but one of the surviving cats went to where the blood stain was, sniffed at it, and let out a howl, such as we'd never heard a cat make.

It was heartbreaking.

9. I had two cats, brother and sister. Brother was an indoor/outdoor cat. Sister was strictly indoor.
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 09:19 AM by 1monster
One March evening, Brother was sitting on the lawn outside the front door. I called him, but he didn't want to come in, so I let him stay out for a while longer.

At nine o'clock, I went back out to bring him in. He wasn't there. He didn't come when I called. And I never saw him again.

I checked both animal shelters, and asked around for three weeks, until, one morning, three neighbor kids were playing in the woods across the road from our house.

They found what was left of Brother. A skeleton and some fur. Something had dragged him out of our yard and across the road to its den. It was the second cat found there in just over a year. (Other neighborhood cats have disappeared, too, since then.) He was eight years old and eighteen pounds. It was a big something that took him out.

Sister retreated to one of those useless spaces in modern houses that are virtually inaccessible and stayed there for three months, coming down only to eat and use the litter box occasionally, and only then when there was no one about.

She had always been a bit of a loner cat, bonding only with my husband, son, and her brother. After she came back to the living, she was even more of a loner.

I brought home three tiny rescue kittens someone had dumped and she briefly bonded with one of those kittens. We had two of them adopted and kept the one she that she bonded with. Two years after Brother died, she is still a bit of a loner, but she mixes with us and the other cats a bit better.

Animals do grieve and they do mourn. They don't forget or heal quickly.

8. I saw first hand a similar incident 4 years ago except it was two birds.
I was cycling (slowly) up a hill so I had a lot of time to observe what was happening. There was an Indigo Bunting attempting to rescue either its' mate or one of its' young that had been killed by a car.
He just kept pulling at the other one trying to help it. He wouldn't move until I was about 2 feet away and even then he only went a few feet away. Even after another 85 miles, I was still upset about that scene.

Animals have no feelings, emotions or souls?????
People who think that way are actually describing themselves as far as I'm concerned.

:(

13. you're right
People who claim animals have no feelings, emotions or souls ARE describing themselves, not the animals.

27. Anyone who has ever had pets or closely observed animals
can probaly relate a similar experience.

I sometimes think that the people who insist that animals don't feel any emotions or sense of loss are just jealous. They realize that animals are more advanced than they are.

Thank you Yellerpup for the happy ending!

10. Reminds me of Morgan's Canon

In no case is an animal activity to be interpreted in terms of higher psychological processes, if it can be fairly interpreted in terms of processes which stand lower in the scale of psychological evolution and development. (Morgan 1903, p. 59)

....contrary to popular belief. Poor baby. BOTH of them. And people just driving by like: "la de da"....sheesh.

14. These dogs belongs to a family that lives nearby.
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 11:05 AM by yellerpup
The dog hit by a car is the mommy of the little male standing by her. Just so you know, Mommy dog survived! My friend, an EMT, is here visiting and knew the whole story. Happy ending! Mommy would not have survived if her baby hadn't stopped traffic...

Edit for spelling.

That's so wonderful.

I'm reading "Animals Make Us Human" right now, and she describes how dog packs are really families. As soon as I saw these pics I wondered if the dogs were related.
